Our Miami Dolphins head into next season needing to re-sign some of their own players while also letting others walk or go via a roster cut or being waived. According to OverTheCap.com, the Dolphins have 37 players under contract heading into the 2025 league year. Of course, draft picks will fill out some of the roster, as will whoever they decide to sign away from other teams during the free-agent period. All of this will be in an effort to go into training camp with 90 players, hopefully with enough quality to start the season with 53 players, who will also hopefully be an upgrade over the previous season. The idea of improving year over year seems like quite a feat for the front office, given the team’s cap situation, not to mention previous struggles.
One player not listed among the 37 is safety Jevon Holland, who will become a free agent at the end of the 2024 league year. Miami can re-sign Holland, franchise tag him, or let him walk. The projected franchise tag number for 2025 for safties is just over 19.6 million dollars, while the estimate for what Holland’s value is in free agency is 98 million for five years, oddly about the same as the tag number at an average of 19,6 million per season. While I was on board with re-upping Holland before the season, I am now not sure that he is worth the big deal, given that he seems to have completely forgotten how to tackle.
There is also a big name entering the final year of his contract is Jaelan Phillips. Phillips is a fan favorite. Part of that is that he ended his college career in Miami as well as being a hell of a good person and one hell of a good player when healthy. The when healthy is the thing. Phillips has now had back-to-back season-ending injuries after entering the league with previous injury issues in college, where he at one point had quit football due to concussions. His final season under contract will pay him 13.2 million. I would like to see the team let him play in the final year of his deal before paying him some giant sum to extend him. Let’s see if he can get through an entire season. You know, the thing they should have done with a certain quarterback.
So, besides those two, many other questions must be answered. The offensive line needs a serious upgrade. This team is going nowhere without a healthy starting quarterback or the ability to effectively run the ball, a cornerstone of any form or offshoot of the West Coast Offense. There is a question at Long Snapper when ours missed most of the season for a reason that no one is sure of. Hell, I can go unit by unit, and nearly every unit and position needs either an upgrade across the board or at least better depth. Either way, some guys need to go or not be re-signed.
