Let’s look back at the events of 2024 for the Giants
This has been a rough year for the New York Giants. As we prepare to say goodbye to 2024, let’s go month-by-month and look back at many of the things that happened during the year.
JANUARY
Jan. 1 — Giants’ RT Tyre Phillips to have surgery for torn quad
We didn’t know it at the time, but this impacted the offensive line depth during the 2024 season.
Jan. 3 — Dexter Lawrence earns 2nd straight Pro Bowl nod
Jan. 7 — Giants finish season with victory over Philadelphia Eagles
Game recap | Giants earn No. 6 pick in 2024 NFL Draft | Season-ending ‘Kudos & Wet Willies’
Jan. 8 — ST coach Thomas McGaughey, OL coach Bobby Johnson fired
This would be the beginning of a massive overhaul of Brian Daboll’s coaching staff.
Jan. 8 — Joe Schoen’s season-ending remarks
The GM said something interesting in that presser, and I wonder what he will say this time if he gets the chance:
“We went through adversity and sometimes you have to go through it,” Schoen said. “We’re still in Year 2. Things were pretty good Year 1. We started fast, had a playoff win and maybe you didn’t see where all the issues were, whether it was in the building, on the team, in the coaching staff, whatever it may have been.
“Going through it I think it sucked, but it also opened our eyes to some things maybe needed to change or we need to get better, we need to change our process …
“You can look at things through rose-colored glasses sometimes when things are going well.”
Jan. 8 — DC Wink Martindale out
This was, of course, an ugly exit.
Jan. 10 — ‘Forever grateful’ Sterling Shepard says goodbye
The veteran wide receiver surprisingly surfaced with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this season.
Jan. 10 — Martindale’s exit become official
Jan. 11 — Carmen Bricillo becomes offensive line coach
The deposed Bobby Johnson ended up as offensive line coach with the Washington Commanders.
Jan. 17 — Joel Thomas hired to coach running backs; Aaron Wellman returns
Jan. 24 — Tyrod Taylor not likely to return to Giants in 2024
It was, and still is, a mystery to me why the Giants seemed to believe during ‘Hard Knocks’ that they might be able to bring Taylor back in 2024.
Jan. 25 — Michael Ghobrial named special teams coordinator
Did he do a good job in his first season?
Jan. 29 — Brandon Brown misses out on Chargers GM job
FEBRUARY
Feb. 1 — Dennard Wilson chooses Tennessee DC job over Giants
Just a reminder that Shane Bowen was not Brian Daboll’s first choice.
Feb. 4 — Giants deny Mike Kafka chance to interview for OC job with Seahawks
They forced him to stay, gave him a fancy new title and then basically shelved him for the year.
Feb. 5 — Shane Bowen replaces Wink Martindale
Feb. 6 — Tim Kelly named tight ends coach
Feb. 8 — In 1-on-1 with BBV, Saquon Barkley seems to know his time in New York is done
Barkley said New York is “home,” and says he loves the passion of the fan base and the organization.
“Top to bottom they do it the right way,” Barkley said. “Class acts. Hard workers. That’s something you want to be aligned with. I’m really happy and fortunate that I was able to get drafted to such a special place. Hopefully in those six years I was able to make an impact on somebody.”
Feb. 10 — Phil Simms endorses Daniel Jones
Well, that didn’t age well.
Feb. 13 — Offering Joe Schoen an offseason blueprint
I will have to go back through this offering more carefully and see how it matches up with what did and did not happen.
Feb. 23 — Salary cap set at $255.4 million
This was a surprisingly generous amount.
Feb. 26 — Tony DelGenio asked whether or not Joe Schoen was a good GM
We’re still asking.
Feb. 28 — MetLife Stadium turf dissed by players
Feb. 29 — 1-on-1 with Chris Simms

Schoen, of course, understands that it doesn’t look that way with the team at 2-8 and having lost five straight games. Especially on the heels of a 6-11 2023 season.
“Nobody’s happy that we’re 2-8,” Schoen said. “I believe in the process and, again, I believe where we’re going.
