Young linebacker impressed during training camp before suffering injury
Dyontae Johnson, who has spent the entire season on injured reserve, was activated on Tuesday by the New York Giants.
A linebacker, Johnson had an impressive training camp before suffering an ankle injury that was expected to keep him sidelined for only a few weeks. The Giants, though, left Johnson on IR until opening his 21-day practice window three weeks ago. That window was near its end when the Giants finally added Johnson to their 53-man roster.
“Definitely felt like I took that next step from year one to year two,” he said. “(Getting injured) was hard, just knowing that all my hard work had paid off, but I couldn’t play. At the end of the day, whatever happened, happened. I’m thankful I’m still here.”
Johnson spent the 2023 season on the Giants’ practice squad.
To make room for Johnson, the Giants waived undrafted rookie free agent defensive tackle Casey Rogers. Rogers played 33 snaps over two games after being added to the 53-man roster.
The Giants also opened the practice window for veteran defensive tackle Armon Watts, who is on IR with a shoulder injury.
