The Linc – Eagles must get the ball to Saquon Barkley against the Commanders

Philadelphia Eagles news and links for 12/22/24.

Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links …

Game Preview – PHI at WAS – Iggles Blitz
No matter what the Eagles do, they need to get the ball to Saquon Barkley. You might remember him making some plays in the first meeting. Barkley had 198 total yards and 2 TDs back in November. He had TD runs of 23 and 39 yards. He had a catch and run for 43 yards that set up more points. Get that man the ball. Kellen Moore has run a lot of no-huddle this year and it has been pretty effective. The Eagles might use that a lot on Sunday to try and get Barkley going and Washington on its heels.

Eagles at Commanders: precap – Hogs Haven
Barkley seems to have come out of this past Sunday’s game against the Steelers less than completely healthy. It’s possible that his effectiveness could be compromised if he is not 100% today, which could limit the threat posed by the Eagles offense; however, reports out of Philly say that he is good to go. The Commanders will need to find a solution to stopping Barkley. Washington’s defensive front ranks 24th in run stop win rate (29.1%), while the Eagles’ offensive line ranks ninth in run block win rate (72.9%). The Commanders also give up the sixth-most rushing yards per game to running backs and are giving up 5.0 yards per carry.

Did the Commanders start off too hot? – BGN
WASTEAM opened the season 4-1, then were 7-2. Then they hit the Kliff Kingsbury cliff. They’ve won two in a row, but last week against the Saints was on the final play. This is a playoff team and yet they will enter the offseason with a ton of holes. They have no real skill position depth behind Terry McLaurin. This is an old roster, 13 players are 30+. They may need a new offensive coordinator. At the beginning of the season if you told the Commanders they’d win 7 games this year they’d have taken it. They’re going to have double digit wins. The 2024 Washington Football Team Commanders feel like the 2022 Giants: new front office, new head coach, a bunch of try hard veterans on short term deals to set the culture during the rebuild of a bad roster… and then they unexpectedly made the playoffs. The Giants, specifically their ownership, mistakenly thought they had arrived, which only set the franchise back even further. Oh no. Washington has one crucial advantage over that Giants team in Jayden Daniels, but that could give them even more reason to buy their own hype. The ingredients are there for Washington to think they’re closer to the prize than they actually are. Let’s hope so.

Bryce Huff grateful for chance to return after wrist surgery – NBCSP
Bryce Huff has been ruled out against the Commanders on Sunday, but he’s grateful that he’s going to return at all this season. “One hundred percent,” Huff said. “Because it was just hurting and I was kind of mad that I wasn’t able to use my hand. I felt like I was just wasting reps so I decided to get it done. I’m glad I can be back for the (end of the) season.” Huff, 26, had surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left wrist on Nov. 21 and is nearing a return from Injured Reserve. He participated in practice this week after his practice window was opened. The surgery, Huff said, did the trick. He has way more functionality in that wrist than he did in November when he eventually elected to have the procedure.

Eagles DBs Darius Slay, Quinyon Mitchell fined for skirmish with Steelers after avoiding a penalty – PFT
Officials penalized only the Steelers after a skirmish in the first quarter of their game with the Eagles on Sunday, even though Philadelphia cornerbacks Darius Slay and Quinyon Mitchell threw punches. In a pool report, referee Alan Eck said “no punches were observed.” The league announced fines for four players involved in the scuffle, including higher fines for Slay and Mitchell than for the Steelers involved in the play.

From Tackle to Guard: A Q&A with Mekhi Becton – PE.com
Mekhi Becton has turned his career around since signing with the Eagles in April. The former No. 11 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft of the Jets played 28 games at left tackle and two at right tackle in four years in New York. Since joining Philadelphia, Becton was extremely coachable, worked his way through the offseason, and made the transition to guard with the help of Run Game Coordinator/Offensive Line Coach Jeff Stoutland and the rest of the Eagles’ staff. Now, the Highland Springs, Virginia native has started in every game he’s played this season (13) and has performed well, ranking 16th in the league for guards with a grade of 77.1, according to Pro Football Focus. Becton spoke with PhiladelphiaEagles.com for an exclusive Q&A to learn more about the former Louisville product on and off the field.

NFL Week 16 bold predictions: Jayden Daniels bests Jalen Hurts; Cooper Kupp rebounds in BIG way – NFL.com
Jalen Hurts and Jayden Daniels are two of just four quarterbacks this season to have compiled a passer rating of 100-plus while also rushing for 400-plus yards. In their first meeting, back in Week 11 (an Eagles win), the pair combined for two touchdowns, with Hurts rushing for one and the rookie throwing for the other. In the rematch, Daniels elevates his game and scores five total touchdowns (two rushing, three passing) to outduel Hurts and keep the Commanders’ playoff aspirations alive.

How can the Commanders clinch a playoff berth in Week 16? – SB Nation
As noted, the Commanders can punch their postseason ticket this weekend. But they will need a substantial amount of help. Washington has three different pathways to the playoffs this weekend. In the first scenario, the Commanders defeat the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. That, coupled with an Atlanta Falcons loss or tie against the New York Giants and a Los Angeles Rams loss or tie against the New York Jets, would clinch a playoff spot for Washington.

Cowboys hot topic: Osa Odighizuwa’s good play could price him out of Dallas – Blogging The Boys
If Odighizuwa is to hit the market, teams will come calling. Although he’s a bit undersized at 280 pounds, Odighizuwa uses his wrestling background to get tremendous leverage and drive much bigger offensive linemen into the backfield. He’s solid against the run, and he helps keep linebackers clean, and teams that see themselves as contenders will be willing to pay him for those services and pay him well. It would behoove the Cowboys to value defensive tackles as a high priority for once during the offseason and bring Odighizuwa back. However, with the way Dallas handles contracts, don’t be surprised if the 2024 campaign is his last with the Cowboys.

New York Giants roster moves: Bobby Okereke’s season is over – Big Blue View
As usual on the day before a game, the New York Giants on Saturday announced a series of roster moves to fortify the roster before facing the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. The Giants added linebacker Bobby Okereke and [former Eagles] edge defender Patrick Johnson to their already overcrowded injured reserve list. Okereke, a defensive captain, played every snap for the Giants in 2023. This is the first season in which he has missed games since 2020.
