Bills vs. Patriots: 5 things to watch for in Week 16
The Buffalo Bills (11-3) approach the end of the 2024 NFL regular season with a matchup at home against the New England Patriots (3-11) at Highmark Stadium.
All week, topics and storylines have been discussed ahead of the Week 16 matchup.
In the end, regardless of what is said by players, coaches, media outlets, and fans, it always comes down to what unfolds on the field in the NFL.
And once the battle arrives, there will be a few particular things to keep in mind to look out for.
Here are five things to watch for during Sunday’s Bills-Patriots clash:
Avoid a trap

The Patriots have struggled in 2024 as their record indicates.
Buffalo heads into Week 16 and a two-touchdown favorite in sportsbooks. The AFC East title is locked up for the Bills as well… but they still have something to play for when it relates to seeding in the AFC postseason. Head coach Sean McDermott has to have his team focused to avoid a “trap” game.
Is he the MVP?

Bills quarterback Josh Allen is the favorite to win the 2024 NFL MVP Award. Whether it’s in Buffalo or the wider NFL world, everyone will be watching to see if the QB can keep up his MVP pace he has recently been on. Last week against the Lions, Allen’s efforts earned him AFC Offensive Player of the Week honors.
Rookie QB

On the flip side of the quarterback battle in Week 16, New England will be led by Drake Maye. The rookie out of North Carolina will face the Bills for the first time in his career… and it’s probably going to be the coldest game he’s played in. In 10 games played (9 starts), Maye has a 2-7 record in 2024. The QB has completed 68.5 percent of his passes and has 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions.
No more 40

With Maye in mind and the general talent the Pats have at 3-11… there is no reason at all that the Bills defense should allow over 40 points against them in a third-straight game. Everyone will look for improvement.
Secondary injuries

What would help the Bills defense is an improvement on the final injury report.
Defensive backs Rasul Douglas (knee), Damar Hamlin (ribs) and Taylor Rapp (neck) all did not play against the Lions. That is one lengthy list of starters out for one secondary. Will any return against the Patriots?
