Your open thread for Thursday Night Football
Fans of defensive football rejoice! Tonight’s edition of Thursday Night Football will feature two of the top defenses in all of the NFL as the Los Angeles Chargers host the Denver Broncos.
The Broncos boast, by far, the most efficient defense in the NFL, allowing -0.136 EPA/play, roughly 0.03 EPA/play fewer than the second place team. The Chargers, meanwhile, have allowed fewest points in the NFL, giving up just 247 on the season — 17.6 per game.
Both teams are looking up at the AFC West leading Kansas City Chiefs and this is a battle for second place in the division. This also promises to be a close game, with the Chargers as mere 2.5-point favorites at home per FanDuel Sportsbook.
Chris’ pick: The Broncos are second in the AFC West and have the better defense, but I think I’m going with the Chargers in this one.
This should be a really competitive game, but I think Justin Herbert will be a bit less affected by the Broncos’ defense than Bo Nix will be by the Chargers’. Herbert is, obviously, more mature and further along in his development than the rookie, so I think he’ll be better equipped to carry his offense.
I could easily see this game going the other way, particularly if the Broncos’ defense is able to take over the game and Nix plays safe, efficient football. But, everything else being so close, I’m erring toward the better (right now) quarterback.
