Lions mailbag: Is there any root cause to these injuries?

This week’s Detroit Lions Midweek Mailbag is all about the Lions’ injuries, how they happened, and what the Lions will do now.

The Detroit Lions’ injury situation is somehow getting worse and worse. Just when it looked like the Lions may have gotten through the worst of it—getting Levi Onwuzurike, DJ Reader, and Josh Paschal back last week—the injury gods struck them down again. Against the Buffalo Bills, the Lions lost Carlton Davis, Alim McNeill, and Khalil Dorsey to long-term injuries (and likely David Montgomery, as well).

That’s left everyone wondering one question: how? How could this be happening to the Lions at such a ridiculous rate?

Theories are all over the place, and on this week’s Midweek Mailbag podcast, we explore some of the most popular theories among fans and share our thoughts on them.

Does the Lions’ physical style of play lend to a higher risk of injury? Is there anything the Lions could or should do about their turf? What about the strength and conditioning staff and the way the Lions practice?

We discuss all those theories and more in this week’s podcast. The injury talk kicks off the podcast. Here are some other topics in this week’s show, along with an estimated timestamp at the beginning of those discussions.

  • 12:00 — Could the Lions implement a grass stadium instead of turf?
  • 17:10 — Why is there a limit on players who can return from IR?
  • 20:40 — Are we going to see the Lions get creative with Sione Vaki after David Montgomery’s injury?
  • 27:30 — How has Levi Onwuzurike been doing, and will he take on Alim McNeill’s role?
  • 30:40 — Will Emmanuel Moseley make a difference in the Lions’ cornerback room? How else may they replace Carlton Davis?
  • 38:20 — How will the Lions adjust to their LB issues covering running backs in the passing game?
  • 42:50 — Should the Lions play more up-tempo early in games to get an early lead rather than trying to establish the run in first quarter?
  • 46:00 — NFC playoff picture: How Lions can clinch division before Week 18
