Giants keep losing starters to injury

The New York Giants on Saturday added starting left guard Jon Runyan Jr. to their rapidly-growing injured reserve list.

Runyan suffered an ankle injury last week against the New Orleans Saints. He had already been ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens, and head coach Brian Daboll had indicated Runyan could miss multiple weeks. With only four games remaining in the season, putting Runyan on IR seemed inevitable.

The Giants signed veteran quarterback Tim Boyle off their practice squad to take Runyan’s spot on the 53-man roster. With Drew Lock unlikely to play because of heel and left elbow injuries, the Giants will need the journeyman Boyle to serve as the backup quarterback for Tommy DeVito.

The Giants chose not to activate linebacker Dyontae Johnson or offensive lineman Austin Schlottman from IR, both of whom have had their 21-day practice windows opened.

Practice squad elevation

The Giants elevated defensive back Raheem Layne from the practice squad for Sunday’s game. With safety Tyler Nubin having been placed on IR, cornerback Dru Phillips already ruled out and cornerback Cor’Dale Flott doubtful with a quad injury the Giants need depth in the secondary.

Significantly, even with Runyan going down, the Giants did not elevate backup offensive lineman Tyre Phillips. Offensive tackles Jermaine Eluemunor (quad) and Evan Neal (hip/ankle) are expected to play, and backup tackle Chris Hubbard (knee) is also expected to be available.
