Bill Belichick was never going to coach the New York Giants

The Belichick dream is now dead

The dream, for those who were harboring it, that Bill Belichick was going to ride in and save the New York Giants in 2025 is dead. Belichick, of course, stunned the football world this week by taking the job as head football coach at the University of North Carolina.

Reporting from ESPN’s Seth Wickersham on Belichick’s decision makes it seem like the Giants were never a realistic destination for the 72-year-old Belichick. Wickersham wrote:

Belichick knew that it would be a rebuild, with the New York press at his heels. Plus, he believes the team would do best to retain its current coach, Brian Daboll.

Personally, I never thought Belichick would come to the Giants. Not with the current state of the team. I never thought Belichick would take an NFL job without a top-tier quarterback already in place, or at least a young one already on board he could mold, and a ready-to-win roster.

I do find it interesting that Wickersham reports Belichick believes Daboll, who worked for Belichick with the New England Patriots from 2001-2006 and again from 2013-2016, should remain as the Giants head coach.

What happens with Daboll is up in the air. One possibility, though, is now off the board.
