The College Football postseason kicked off last week with conference championship games on Friday and Saturday. Here are some key takeaways regarding NFL Draft prospects.
- It was nice to see Mykel Williams healthy. The SEC title game gave Georgia another swing at Texas and the defense was as dominant this time around as they were in their first meeting earlier this year. Mykel Williams was a force, sacking Quinn Ewers twice. Williams, at his best, has everything a team would want in an edge player. He is big, athletic, strong as hell, with long arms. Health has been a main concern for Williams this year but Saturday was a great example of what he can do at 100%.
- Speaking of Quinn Ewers. Woof. I have been one of Ewers’ biggest proponents but there is no defending how bad he looked against Georgia in both their games. The first game there was a health concern while this one he had no excuse to look as hapless as he did at times. Ewers is a talented player. That is hard to dispute. But his decision making and poise wilted when his team needed him most. Luckily he can still make up for it in the playoffs and hopefully make a good impression.
- Tez Johnson is so much fun. The Ducks are sure happy to have him back in the lineup after he caught 11 passes for over 180 yards and a score against Penn State on Saturday. His performance was crucial in lifting Oregon to a Big 10 title and securing the one seed in the College Football Playoffs. Johnson is going to be heavily scrutinized as a prospect given his 5’10”, 165 pound frame, but size does not matter when he is on the field. He does a good job keeping himself clean before, during, and after the catch with great route running and shifty YAC ability. I’d understand teams being wary, but this young man is a playmaker and he will keep showing that in the playoffs.
Players of the Week
Cam Skattebo, Running Back Arizona State: The Big 12 Championship game was a great place for Cam Skattebo to familiarize the entire country with him. The senior running back carried the ball 16 times for 170 yards and a score while catching two passes for 38 yards and another touchdown. His combination of vision, patience, burst, and a hard running style proved too much for the Iowa State defense. Skattebo now has over 2,00 yards of total offense this year, 1,568 on the ground and 506 through the air, and 22 touchdowns to his name. Skattebo is one of the best running backs in the country and now will get to shine in the College Football Playoffs.
Daylan Everette, Cornerback, Georgia: Quinn Ewers long day on Saturday is owed in large part to Daylan Everette, who picked off two of his passes in the SEC championship game and broke up one more. Everette only gave up three catches on nine targets that day, showing off his lockdown ability. Funny enough, all three of Everette’s interceptions this year came against Texas. The 6’1”, 190 pound defender is the top cornerback in Georgia’s secondary and could continue to be a factor in the playoffs.
