During his press conference on Friday, Cincinnati Bengals star wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase vented some frustrations, calling out the team’s ability to close out games as the culprit to the team’s woes this season, according to WLWT’s Olivia Ray.
“Bro, we’re not finishing games,” he said. “We had opportunities to close games out. It came down to the final three minutes, plays on offense. It’s not my job to figure out what they (defense) got going on. It’s my job to score touchdowns and block for Chase Brown.”
Chase has absolutely done his job. Through the 12 games he’s played this season, Chase has caught 79 passes for 1,142 yards and 13 touchdowns. He is third in the league in receptions but first in the NFL in receiving yards and receiving touchdowns, and he is on pace for 118 receptions for 1,713 yards and 19 touchdowns, which would all be career highs.
Unfortunately, his career year coincides with one of the worst defensive years the Bengals have ever had, leading to a 4-8 record. They are not mathematically eliminated from the playoffs yet, but they might as well be.
Chase is sure to have an incredible career with the Bengals, but seasons like this are likely few and far between. He can’t be realistically counted on to score close to 20 touchdowns a year.
Hopefully, the next time he does, the team won’t waste it.
