Other Giant observations
One goal for each NFL team for the rest of the 2024 season | PFF
New York Giants: Lean on the Rookie Playmakers. The Giants have been reduced to watching their draft stock, and season-ending injuries to Dexter Lawrence and Theo Johnson haven’t helped. New York will almost assuredly add a high-profile quarterback this offseason, meaning its executives and fans should concentrate on impressive young pieces. Andru Phillips (81.9 PFF overall grade) and Tyler Nubin (75.9 PFF run-defense grade, 78.0 PFF tackling grade) appear to be long-term pieces in the secondary, while Malik Nabers (81.9 PFF receiving grade) has looked unstoppable despite dismal play under center. If the Giants want to turn things around next year, they’ll need their newcomers to play at this high of a level once again.

NY Giants: Timeline as Brian Daboll, Joe Schoen fight to survive | The Record
The Record’s Art Stapleton makes the case for keeping the current leadership in place:
The Giants are not blind to where they are now despite what they may say publicly about how close they are….A foundation that needed to be rebuilt still has areas to address in order for this team to turn the corner. Another strong offseason in combination with the continued development of younger players on the roster, and those close games that are being lost might be swung in their favor.
Have Schoen and Daboll shown some semblance of competency and a plan, and a willingness to work together? Yes, and with the perspective of where the Giants were in 2021 after where they were in 2019 and in 2017 and in 2015, the thought of giving this regime the length of a standard four-year rookie contract is not too much of an ask. That might be the only way to prevent the Giants’ regrettable history over the past decade from repeating itself once again.
Brian Daboll, Mike McCarthy among NFL coaches with most to prove over rest of 2024 season | NFL.com
1. Brian Daboll, New York Giants. New York Giants president John Mara surely didn’t anticipate that as December began, the Giants would be mired in a seven-game losing streak that dropped them to 2-10, that they would have endured an awkward divorce from quarterback Daniel Jones and that they would have players’ frustrations with play-calling (via receiver Malik Nabers) and effort (via Nabers, defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence and others) leaking out. Mara made clear that he knows he can’t fire coaches every two years, but if he is reconsidering — and it would be hard to blame him if he is — Daboll, at the very least, has to show players are not tuning him out and will still play hard for him to give Mara pause about making any moves.

As ex-Giants thrive around NFL, it’s more pain for fans, more reason to question Joe Schoen | The Athletic
When each move is examined individually (RB Saquon Barkley, S Xavier McKinney, DL Leonard Williams, S Julian Love) there’s rational behind the thought process. But cumulatively, every decision has had the worst possible outcome — at least at this point.
But as the Giants bottom out in Year 3 of Schoen’s regime, it’s hard to reconcile that he’s let a handful of the best players from his one successful season leave. If Schoen gets a fourth year, he may want to reconsider his adherence to positional value, especially when his most talented players and strongest leaders are involved. Maybe paying Barkley and McKinney wouldn’t have been wise investments. But Schoen’s inability to redirect those savings into a competitive roster has called into question everything about his process.
NextGen Stats Reveals Giants Defense Leads League in This Alarming Stat | SI.com
According to NextGen Stats, the Giants’ defense has allowed a 69.2% completion percentage on pass attempts of 20+ air yards this season, the highest by any defense since the founding of NextGen Stats in 2016. And opponents are averaging 47.3 passing yards per game on deep throws of 20+ air yards and have been enjoying as much as 3.44 seconds to throw on those deep balls despite the Giants having a 38.5% blitz rate on those deep pass attempts.
Inside the Numbers: Malik Nabers’ chase for NFL rookie reception record | Giants.com
Nabers, the Giants’ first-round draft choice this season, has 75 catches in 10 games – he missed two games with a concussion – a 7.5 catches-per-game pace that projects to 112 receptions if he plays each of the final five games and maintains the same productivity. The rookie record of 105 receptions was set by the Ram’s Puka Nacua in 2023. So, if Nabers continues to catch passes at or close to his current rate, the record could be his.
NFL Draft 2025: Should Giants trade up for Shedeur Sanders if they don’t get No. 1 pick? | NJ.com
The Giants have already clinched their ninth season with double digit losses in 11 years.
But even at 2-10, they’re not a lock to get the No. 1 overall pick — and their preferred quarterback replacement for Daniel Jones — in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Saints to open practice window for Kendre Miller, Bub Means | Saints | nola.com
Interim head coach Darren Rizzi said the team plans to open the 21-day practice window for both running back Kendre Miller and wide receiver Bub Means this week, and hinted that one or both could return to the lineup. Miller, in particular, could have a big impact after New Orleans learned Monday that all-purpose offensive weapon Taysom Hill was done for the season with what is expected to be an ACL tear.
One goal for each NFL team for the rest of the 2024 season | PFF
New Orleans Saints: Better Stop the Run. The Saints may finally succumb to at least a partial rebuild this offseason, and considerable work needs to be done on the defensive side of the ball. Still, New Orleans will likely bring back several starters on a unit that has not been effective against the ground game: The Saints rank 32nd in team run-defense grade and 31st in rushing EPA per play. More good work from Jordan Howden and Alontae Taylor, each of whom has posted a PFF run-defense grade of 76.6 or better, could be a catalyst for players like Nathan Shepherd and Bryan Bresee.
