NFL power rankings: Giants are the worst team in football

NFL power rankings: Giants are the worst team in football

Can it get worse? With six games to go it probably can

We gave up posting weekly NFL power rankings a few weeks ago because with the New York Giants floundering near the bottom each week it seemed to be a pointless exercise. They are back this week, though, because the Giants have bottomed out.

They are the worst team in football.

After six straight losses, the last two to a terrible Carolina Panthers most used to believe was worse than the Giants and an embarrassing 30-7 defeat by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, six of the 10 rankings we are using this week have the Giants at No. 32. None have New York above No. 30.

So, they are looked at as the worst team in football right now. Deservedly so.

The Athletic — No. 32

Malik Nabers called out the play calling Sunday. Dexter Lawrence definitely called out his team’s toughness. And the Giants lost their sixth straight while former Giant Saquon Barkley continued his MVP-caliber season. The Giants, who were outgained by 205 yards Sunday, already have cut one-time franchise quarterback Daniel Jones. Coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen may be next.

ESPN — No. 32

Considering the Giants are dead last in total FPI, it’s hard to come up with many positives. Their offense and special teams are among the league’s worst, and the defense is bad. Not what you want. The offense is the biggest headscratcher. Coach Brian Daboll took over playcalling, the Giants drafted wide receiver Malik Nabers at No. 6 overall and they upgraded the offensive line with veterans in free agency. Yet, the offense is scoring a league-worst 14.8 points per game and is 28th in yards per play (4.7).

USA Today — No. 32

The coach is in peril. They just got blown up. The starting quarterback is gone. They’re not making the playoffs. What’s their motivation?

CBS Sports (Prisco) — No. 32

So much for Tommy DeVito adding life to this team. They are so bad right now.

Sporting News — No. 31

The Giants can expect to have a new coach with that Daniel Jones-less disaster for Brian Daboll vs. Tampa.

New York Post — No. 31

The Giants benched (and then cut) Daniel Jones, bypassed backup Drew Lock and turned to third-stringer Tommy DeVito, who took four sacks in a 30-7 loss to the Buccaneers. After the game, stars described the team’s own performance as “soft,” questioned play-calling and called out a lack of effort. Throw in a modern NFL-record-tying 10 consecutive games without a defensive interception.

Yahoo Sports — No. 32

If the Giants truly played Tommy DeVito because they think he gives them the best chance to win, doesn’t that reflect on coach Brian Daboll, assuming he made that decision? It might speak to his ability to identify which players on his team deserve to start. Not in a good way.

Bleacher Report — No. 31

Maybe Daniel Jones wasn’t the problem in New York.

Tommy DeVito’s first start for the Giants was a disaster. DeVito failed to clear 200 passing yards in a lopsided loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It wasn’t just DeVito, though—the reality was that no one for the Giants played especially well.

33rd Team — No. 31

The decision to waive Daniel Jones was a smart one financially for the New York Giants. However, it might have cost Brian Daboll the locker room.

The Giants weren’t competitive at all against the Buccaneers, and it appears that the vibes in the locker room have turned. They are at the bottom of the NFC East once again, and it certainly feels like they will have a new head coach in 2025.

NFL Trade Rumors — No. 32

Starting QB Daniel Jones was cut on Friday and former third-stringer Tommy DeVito got the start. DeVito started a handful of games last season, but the 2023 UDFA was in over his head against this aggressive Tampa Bay defense.
