The Miami Dolphins will look to bolster their secondary and special teams unit with their rookie sixth-round pick out of California.

The Miami Dolphins activated Isaiah Wynn from the Physically Unable To Perform List on Monday evening, in addition to a handful of other roster moves. Then today, Dolphins linebacker Shaq Barrett announced he intends to unretire, adding another wrinkle to Miami’s already growing list of roster decisions.

Now, the team has made yet another roster move, releasing veteran safety Marcus Maye — NFL insider Tom Pelissero was the first to report. According to Pelissero, the Dolphins hope to sign Maye to the practice squad if he clears waivers.

With the veteran Maye on his way out, the Dolphins have activated rookie safety Patrick McMorris from the injured reserve list. McMorris was a sixth-round pick of the Dolphins in this year’s draft and showed enough during the preseason to excite fans. Unfortunately, a calf injury would force McMorris to miss the first 12 weeks of the season. But now, with a spot on the roster, he will look to get back on the field quickly and help a Dolphins’ safety room that has struggled at times this season.

Here’s what the Dolphins official transcript says about Miami’s rookie safety:::

“McMorris was selected by Miami in the sixth round (198th overall) of the 2024 NFL Draft. He played his final collegiate season at California (2023), where he started all 13 games and recorded 90 tackles (50 solo), 1.0 sack, one interception, eight passes defensed, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries and was named All-Pac 12 honorable mention. McMorris transferred from San Diego State, where he played four seasons (2019-22). He earned first-team All-Mountain West honors in 2021 and 2022.”

What are your thoughts on the Dolphins waiving Marcus Maye? Are you excited to see what rookie safety Patrick McMorris can do? How do you think this impacts the defense for Thursday’s primetime matchup vs. the Green Bay Packers? Let us know in the comments section below!
