The Detroit Lions released their Week 12 injury designations and they’ll be without Ennis Rakestraw against the Colts.
The Detroit Lions (9-1) and Indianapolis Colts (5-6) have released their injury designations ahead of their Week 12 matchup on Sunday. The news is a bit of a mixed bag in the Lions’ secondary, as they’re dealing with a couple of injuries but they could also be getting some more depth very soon.
Let’s take a look at Friday’s injury report and get you up to date with what we know. Note that any changes from yesterday’s report will be bolded.
Ruled OUT
- CB Ennis Rakestraw (hamstring) — New injury
Rakestraw was a surprise no-show during the time open to the media during Friday’s practice. Unfortunately, he apparently suffered a hamstring which has led to him being ruled out for the game against the Colts. The Lions will turn to Kindle Vildor and Khalil Dorsey to fill out the reserve cornerback roles.
Questionable
- CB Terrion Arnold (groin)
- CB Emmanuel Moseley (pec) — Days remaining in injury evaluation window: 4
Despite suffering the dreaded mid-week injury, Arnold looks like he has escaped without any major concerns.
“Yeah he should be good,” Lions coach Dan Campbell said of Arnold. “This morning he went in, got treatment, everything looked like it’s pretty good, so we’ll see what he looks like at practice today. I’m not concerned right now, but we’ll see how this day goes.”
A questionable designation is encouraging but it does leave the door open in case he suffered a setback. With the Lions traveling this week, if he makes the trip on Saturday and is not ruled out, there’s a strong chance he’ll be ready to play on Sunday.
For now, Moseley remains on injured reserve, but the fact that he has been listed as questionable leaves the door open for him to be activated ahead of this Sunday’s game.
“Yeah, he’s been taking reps, he’s gotten better over the last three weeks, Campbell said of Moseley. “[…] Yeah, he’s trending the right way, I’ll tell you I would love to get him up this game and I think we’ll see what today looks like. He’s continuing to get better and better. But we see him doing a little bit of everything, corner, nickel, safety. He’s help is what he is. He brings another piece for us that we can use.”
This is a very encouraging sign for the Lions who can upgrade a secondary that has already been playing at an incredibly high level.
Not listed with an injury designation
- TE Sam LaPorta (shoulder)
- TE Shane Zylstra (neck)
- CB Carlton Davis (thumb)
After missing Week 11, LaPorta has stacked practices this week and it appears he is ready to return to the field on game days.
“Yeah, he’s been good,” Campbell said of LaPorta. “Here we go, two days in and I feel like he’s trending the right way so he looks pretty good. He looks like he’s got fresh legs so that’s good.”
Zylstra, who suffered his neck injury in Week 11, has also practiced in full all week and is good to play as TE3 in the Lions game plan this week.
Davis is still dealing with his broken thumb but he played through the injury last week, with the aid of a wrap on his hand, and looks good to play again this week.
Injured reserve update
- Jalen Reeves-Maybin (neck)
Reeves-Maybin is required to sit out two more games and is eligible to return in Week 14. And with the Lions slowly getting thinner at linebacker, our own Jeremy Reisman asked Campbell for an update on his status.
“Yeah, we’re hopeful but that’s another one of those, as he’s on IR, we’re taking it kind of day-to-day, week-to-week,” Campbell said of Reeves-Maybin. “It’s just a matter of how quickly he recovers. We’re hopeful, but we really don’t know at this time.”
Unfortunately, that’s not much of a definitive update, but it is encouraging that Campbell suggested there was a chance he could return at some point this season.
