This Jahmyr Gibbs touchdown from Sunday looks REMARKABLY like a Barry Sanders touchdown.
It’s sacrilege to refer to any NFL running back as “Barry Sanders-esque” regardless of whether he plays for the Detroit Lions or any other team. There is—and will only ever be—one Barry Sanders.
Buuuuuuuuuuuuuut… it’s pretty hard to deny the resemblance of this one particular play from the Lions’ 52-6 beatdown of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
On the play, Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs is a yard away from the goal line, but he encounters a ton of traffic on what was supposed to be a relatively simple run up the middle. He’s able to escape the the defenders crashing down with a savvy spin move. Then he just uses his 4.36 40-yard dash speed to beat every defender to the corner of the end zone for the score.

Now let’s flash back to 1991. Sanders and the 11-4 Lions vs. the 13-2 Buffalo Bills. The Lions are down 7-0 early in the fourth quarter, needing to win this game to clinch the NFC Central and a first-round bye. After being denied on first down from the 1-yard line, the Lions went right back to Sanders. And while it looked like he was about to get stopped in the backfield, he pulled off an even cleaner spin move to find daylight toward the sideline. You can watch the play at 1:47:55 mark of this historic YouTube video.
The Lions would go on to win the game in overtime, win the division, and make it all the way to the NFC Championship game.
Now, let’s watch Gibbs’ and Sanders’ plays side-by-side, as combined by the Lions social media team:

It’s not a perfect one-to-one comparison, but like I said at the top: there is no comparison to Sanders. Regardless, it’s a cool moment and the GOAT himself approved:
