Giants news, 11/7: Darius Slayton won’t make Germany trip, Jakob Johnson, Graham Gano, more headlines

New York Giants news for Friday

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

From Big Blue View

Other Giant observations

Jakob Johnson: Giants journey comes full circle in Germany homecoming | The Record

“Friends back in Germany see all the transactions and they’re like, ‘Why are they doing that to you?'” he said.

Then Johnson revealed the Giants were up front with their plans for him from the outset when he signed in August. If he was going to be released from the PSQ, they would do him a solid and release him after he practiced one day that week, allowing him to get paid for the full week.

Giants predictions at NFL midseason: Brian Daboll, Joe Schoen survive; Daniel Jones benched | The Athletic

Consider, there are eight games remaining this season, and the most important might be the one coming up Sunday morning. The Giants head to Munich for a matchup against the 2-7 Carolina Panthers. If the Giants fall to one of the worst teams in the league and extend their losing streak to five games, well, things definitely will become more tense. On the other hand, if the Giants find a way to come out of Sunday with their first victory in over a month and avoid any true embarrassing moments later, my guess is the duo sticks around through season’s end.

The Balancing Act of Team-Building with Brandon Brown |The Playcallers

Giants Assistant GM Brandon Brown joins The Playcallers to discuss the art of communicating in both good and tough times, the marriage of scouting and technology and the critical decisions the Giants are facing in the future.

“We’re excited to go over there,” quarterback Daniel Jones said. “I think just the one experience I have to look back on is the London trip and just how much energy and excitement there was in that stadium, and the fans and how into it they are. That was a really cool experience. Hoping and expecting kind of the same thing here in Germany. Looking forward to playing in that stadium.”

NFL Defense Rankings: Who Has the Best Defense in the League? | ProFootballNetwork.com

15) New York Giants. This Giants defensive unit would be a perfect complement to an above-average offense. They are fifth in red-zone efficiency this season and lead the league in sack rate. This group is made to be on a team defending a lead, but their pitiful offense has meant that is not the case. Hopefully, this defense can be an anchor point to build a team around, but even then, they still need to make some run-game improvements on defense.

NFL Coach of the Year, MVP and biggest surprises (and disappointments) at midseason | The Athletic

Defensive Player of the Year: Dexter Lawrence II, New York Giants. Lawrence is a 6-foot-4, 340-pound nose tackle with nine sacks in nine games, twice his full-season total from 2023 when he finished ninth in voting for the award. Although defensive tackles won three of the first four DPOY awards (introduced in 1971), including “Mean” Joe Greene twice in the early 1970s, none fit Lawrence’s profile from a size standpoint. Aaron Donald (280 pounds) is the only defensive tackle to win the award since 2000. Cortez Kennedy, Dana Stubblefield and Warren Sapp won it in the 1990s, all while weighing in the lower 300s.

Giants have two top 10 interior pass rushers

PFF Grades and Data: Everything you need to know for every NFL Week 10 game | PFF

Daniel Jones leads the league in dropbacks while playing from behind, with 239 this season. He has completed 64% of his passes in those situations, putting him 16th among quarterbacks. However, his receivers have recorded a 10% drop rate in those situations, the third-highest in the league. The Giants’ 16 drops while trailing are the most in the NFL this season.

This is the sad reality for Daniel Jones with Brian Daboll’s big Giants chance coming | New York Post

Regardless of how diligently Jones prepares, that he’s the first person in the building and last one out, how hard he plays or how well he represents the franchise with class, six years with one winning season to show for it is enough time for everyone to know this hasn’t worked and it’s time to move on.

So, we’re drawing closer to Daboll answering that weekly question with an announcement that there actually will be a change at quarterback.

2025 NFL mock draft: How many QBs crack the top 10? Is Travis Hunter worth the No. 1 pick? | The Athletic

6. New York Giants: Cam Ward, QB, Miami. If a team can give Ward a year to sit, watch and adjust to the speed of the NFL, then I don’t mind the idea of taking him top 10. If you’re asking him to save you tomorrow, though, you might be disappointed. Ward has gotten better every year he’s played, but his tape against big-time defenses is still pretty limited — a playoff appearance could help there.

This week’s opponent

Adam Thielen, Ickey Ekwonu don’t practice for Panthers | Pro Football Talk

The Panthers remained without wide receiver Adam Thielen and left tackle Ickey Ekwonu in their final stateside practice ahead of Sunday’s game against the Giants in Munich.

Thielen remains on injured reserve with a hamstring injury, but he can be activated at any time after being designated for return. Ekwonu is dealing with an ankle injury and Friday will bring a chance for the team to update both of their outlooks for Sunday.

Carolina Panthers extend Chuba Hubbard | Cat Scratch Reader

The Carolina Panthers have signed running back Chuba Hubbard to a four year contract extension with a base value of about $33 million. $15 million are guaranteed. This season has been his best to date. He sits fifth in the league in rushing yards with 665 through nine games. He’s added five touchdowns on the ground and another one through the air.

“He exemplifies everything we want on and off the field,” GM Dan Morgan said. “Chuba is passionate about football, is productive, and is committed to his teammates and winning.”

NFL Week 10 Preview: Schedule, storylines and matchups to watch | PFF

Carolina’s pass protection has been its strong suit this season, but with the loss of LT Ikem Ekwonu to an ankle injury — which may sideline him again this week — this team has needed to shuffle the offensive line. That sent Brady Christensen — who was starting at center for the injured Austin Corbett — to left tackle, and elevated Cade Mays to start at center. In his lone start last week, the third-year center earned a quality 84.4 PFF pass-blocking grade.
