New York Giants news for Thursday

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

From Big Blue View

Other Giant observations

2024 NFL trade deadline winners, losers: Chiefs, Lions get richer; why did Giants stay put? | The Athletic

Loser: New York Giants Other teams had interest in pass-rusher Azeez Ojulari, but none of the offers satisfied the Giants enough to pull the trigger on a deal. Ojulari could’ve helped someone else. He has six sacks despite playing behind Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux, and the Giants could have used the future picks to fortify their weak roster. Instead, Ojulari stays put and New York adds no resources.

Azeez happy to still be a Giant

Why didn’t the Giants trade Azeez Ojulari or Darius Slayton before the deadline? | The Athletic

The New York Giants’ inactivity at Tuesday’s trade deadline can’t be fully evaluated for months.

Was holding a hard line on wide receiver Darius Slayton and outside linebacker Azeez Ojulari a decision driven by self-preservation, as weakening a 2-7 roster could damage the job security of general manager Joe Schoen and coach Brian Daboll? Or was standing pat a calculated decision based on a belief the team will be able to re-sign the pending free agents to avoid letting more homegrown talent walk?

Inside Brian Burns’ trade from the Panthers to Giants | ESPN.com

Burns said he’s happy with his situation with the Giants. He’s in the New York market, where he gets to play in more prime-time games (three plus a Thanksgiving game in Dallas) and receive more exposure. He said this is the biggest difference he has noticed between the Panthers and Giants.

Burns’ production has been similar — he has five sacks and a top 10 pass rush win rate (20.9%). He’s on pace for the second double-digit sack season of his career despite playing through groin and Achilles injuries that had him limping out of the locker room after games the past six weeks.

On playing tough despite the team record: “I think we’ve got a lot of the right guys that are made of the right DNA. Team-first players. Again, you’re not happy about the results, but you control what you can control, which is the upcoming week. We’ve got a bunch of guys that do that each and every week.”

Giants’ Tommy DeVito prepared to bring ‘F it playing style’ to next NFL chance | New York Post

“I started off in college playing in the black and white,” DeVito said. “I think in the NFL you have to play in the gray, especially at the quarterback position. Not everything is going to be clean. You have to be able to operate when things are bad. That gives me that ‘F it’ playing style from time to time. Whether it be here or another team, whenever it is in the future, I think you still need to have that chip and that edge about you — but continue to learn more between the ears and make good decisions.”

Evan: Time for Giants to play Tommy DeVito over Daniel Jones | WFAN.com

Given Jones’ $23 million injury guarantee for 2025, Evan says he disagrees with the Giants head coach, and says he would rather evaluate Tommy DeVito than “re-evaluate” Jones.

“It’s not about Daniel Jones sucking. It’s not about him being mediocre,” Evan said. “It’s not even about him not giving them the best chance to win, because he does. It’s because, for the last six years, Daniel Jones’ best quality is making plays with his legs…and I feel like that’s unsustainable when you’re 2-7, when you’re not making the playoffs anymore, and you can’t afford to get this guy hurt because of what it does to your salary cap.”

NFL Week 10 latest buzz, predictions, questions, fantasy tips | ESPN.com

ESPN’s Dan Graziano reported, “After spending some time around the team over the weekend, I’m not convinced [Jones] is the locked-in starter for the rest of the season” ahead of backup Drew Lock.

“The Giants barely let Jones throw the ball in the first half against the Commanders, and while he put up some good fourth-quarter numbers, New York was behind and had to throw,” Graziano stated. “The Giants wanted to give Jones this season to determine whether he can still be their long-term answer at quarterback, but they could reach a point where they decide they’ve seen enough and are convinced to move in a different direction.”

Daniel Jones, Angry Run Award winner

2024 NFL midseason report: Every team’s best player, biggest surprise | PFF

Biggest surprise: CB Andru Phillips. It’s not often that you can locate a long-term productive slot player in the third round, but the Giants appear to have done that with Phillips. His 76.8 coverage grade is the best among any Giants defensive back, and he’s added a 74.0 run defense grade. Altogether, Phillips’ 79.2 overall grade is ninth among qualifying corners.

Jayden Daniels, Brock Bowers lead 2024 NFL midseason All-Rookie team | The Athletic

Tyrone Tracy Jr., New York Giants: At the season’s midway point, Tracy is leading all rookie running backs in rushing — which is impressive, considering he had just 12 carries in September. He now has 442 rushing yards (5.0 yards per carry) and a pair of touchdown runs. A former receiver in college, Tracy has also been productive as a pass catcher and has yet to fumble. What separates him among this class is the explosive plays — he leads all rookie backs in carries of 20- and 10-plus yards (four and 11, respectively).

Malik Nabers and Tyler Nubin were runner ups at their positions while Dru Phillips and Theo Johnson were an honorable mention.

Super Bowl Desperation Rankings: NFL fan bases in need of a championship | FOX Sports

14. New York Giants. Oh, they know they had it good for a while and they savor their four Super Bowl trophies and the fact that it’s only been 13 years since the last one. Their desperation comes from what’s happened since. They’re on their way to their 10th losing season in 13 years. That includes eight seasons of double-digit losses and a record of 78-125-1. They’ve even become a coven of chaos with five head coaches and four GMs in the last eight years. They were once a model franchise. Now the model is broken.

This week’s opponent

Panthers’ Bryce Young took a significant step forward in Week 9 | PFF

Young finished Week 9 against the New Orleans Saints with a 77.8 PFF overall grade, his highest grade this season and the third-highest of his career. His stat line doesn’t look overly impressive, but a major reason for that is his two big-time throws being dropped and intercepted — two unlucky plays that would have made his box score better reflect his performance.

The Panthers are getting reinforcements, including Jonathon Brooks | Cat Scratch Reader

If Brooks does play, he’ll likely play a complementary role to Chuba Hubbard and eat into Miles Sanders’ snaps as the backup. If he is anything like the player he was in college, he’ll provide some explosive pop to a backfield that is currently lacking in that regard.

Brooks isn’t the only player coming back just in time for the stretch run. Lineman DJ Wonnum and Jaden Crumedy are practicing fully and look set to make their season debuts. Jordan Fuller and Tommy Tremble are also back at practice after missing a few games with hamstring and back injuries respectively. Adam Thielen didn’t practice on Wednesday but there is seemingly a chance that he’ll be back sooner rather than later.

2024 NFL midseason report: Every team’s best player, biggest surprise | PFF

Highest-graded player: WR Jalen Coker (79.8). Coker has been a very pleasant breakout on a Panthers team that hasn’t induced much optimism this season. The undrafted free agent has posted a 79.5 receiving grade, the third-highest of any rookie receiver and the best on Carolina.
