Jamie Gillan apparently ready to resume punting duties
The New York Giants have terminated the contract of veteran punter Matt Haack, a clear sign that regular punter Jamie Gillan is ready to return from a left hamstring injury.
Gillan has missed the last four games, though the Giants did not put him on injured reserve.
Haack, in his eighth NFL season, averaged 47.0 yards per punt over four games for the Giants, with a net average of 39.6 yards per punt. Gillan was averaging 47.8 yards per punt and 42.3 net yards before being injured.
The Giants’ kicking group could be back to its original 2024 configuration this Sunday against the Carolina Panthers. Head coach Brian Daboll indicated on Monday that placekicker Graham Gano, on IR since suffering a Week 2 hamstring injury, could be ready to return this week.
Greg Joseph kicked in place of Gano for six games. Rookie Jude McAtamney was elevated from the practice squad to handle placekicking last Sunday against the Washington Commanders after Joseph was placed on IR with an oblique injury.
The Giants are also reportedly adding rookie offensive lineman Bryan Hudson to their practice squad. Hudson was released this week from the New England Patriots practice squad. A center, Hudson played collegiately at Louisville and went undrafted.
