The Bengals made an all-new type of move for them, and it is hopefully a sign of things to come.
The Cincinnati Bengals have never in their history made a direct player for pick trade during the season.
Until today.
With the trade of a seventh-round pick for Khalil Herbert, the Bengals showed that they are serious about competing this season after the victory against the Raiders. With Zack Moss possibly missing the rest of the regular season, the team desperately needed a back to pair with Chase Brown, and Herbert is a great addition.
A back who is just ok in the passing game and a decent but not great pass blocker, Herbert grades out very well as a rusher and can immediately get some snaps in a near must-win against the Ravens.
With this unprecedented Bengals trade, there is some hope this isn’t the end of their day, with the trade deadline at 4 PM ET. An addition on the defense, especially one that helps the pass rush, could really help this team come around. The Herbert trade could be a sign that the Bengals are being aggressive this year.
So, how would you grade the move for Cincinnati? Let us know in the poll below and in the comments section!
Now, let’s see what Twitter thought of the Herbert addition (including his own reaction).
Thank you God #WhoDey

Khalil Herbert has forced a missed tackle on 23.4% of his carries since 2022:
The 10th highest rate among RBs (min. 200 att.)

The Cincinnati Bengals trade with the Bears to get running back Khalil Herbert, and I was told they’re not done. Cincinnati continues to look around the league for an addition on defense.

Interesting nugget on new Bengal Khalil Herbert.
He has turned 22 rushing attempts on 3/4th down and short (3 yards or less) into 16 first downs. He’s built like a bowling ball (5’9″, 212)
This might solve a big issue that has plagued the Bengals.

Khalil Herbert should be a perfect dump-down back for Joe Burrow and the Bengals offense.
Should also allow them to expand what’s been a morbid screen game this season. pic.twitter.com/2LyA4OJsjM

A little bit more career data on new Bengals RB Khalil Herbert:
▪️YCO/attempt – 3.17 (#1 on the Bengals)
▪️MTF/attempt – 0.21 (#1 on the Bengals)
▪️Elusiveness rating – 71.4 (#1 on the Bengals)
▪️Pass block grade – 60.1 (not his strength but clearly above Chase Brown)Herbert… https://t.co/rFQ9bjW3sG

Khalil Herbert has a 20.4% avoided tackle rate since he entered the league in 2021 that is tied for 15th best among RBs with 300+ carries and just ahead of Christian McCaffrey (20.0%).
I don’t know why he fell out of favor in Chicago, but this seems like a win for the Bengals. https://t.co/ltDii6b1Jt pic.twitter.com/HdSRPZSnxy

Khalil Herbert has 103 career pass blocking snaps.
He has been charged with 9 pressures and 1 sack from PFF.
Usually graded in the 54-60 for pass blocking.

Easy to forget the Bengals are still an attractive destination. Which other players have reps asking permission for trades and eyeballing Cincy? https://t.co/onMK1OIEDU

Not using Khalil Herbert all season was so weird. Even with his flaws in pass pro and as a receiver, he’s been one of the most efficient runners in the league the last few years.
But clearly he wasn’t going to play unless there’s an injury. And surely wanted out. So whatever. https://t.co/BOE4g2Je0N

I don’t get why Khalil Herbert fell out of favor with the Bears.
261 carries for 1,342 yards (5.1 YPC) and 6 TDs over the last two years.
Saw 8 carries this year.
He might be a bigger threat in that Bengals offense than people realize.
