Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links …
NFL Week 9: Biggest questions, takeaways for every game – ESPN
Should Saquon Barkley be in the conversation for Offensive Player of the Year? Absolutely. Barkley entered Sunday with the second-most scrimmage yards in the league (872) and tacked on nearly 200 more, along with a pair of touchdowns. He mesmerized the crowd with a backwards leap over a defender in the second quarter and showed off his pass-catching chops with a 20-yard touchdown grab in the first quarter. It wasn’t all pretty, as Barkley was charged with a key fumble that the Jaguars returned for a touchdown, but overall he’s performing as well as any skill player in the league.

But Saquon is not plenty of other players. He is special. Barkley finished the game with 27 carries for 159 yards (5.9) and one touchdown that oddly enough came on a 3rd-and-17 coward’s draw. He also caught three of his four targets for 40 yards and a touchdown on the wheel route (undefeated). Nice of the Eagles to remember that Barkley can be a downfield weapon in the passing attack. Barkley’s 199 yards from scrimmage is the third-highest single-game output of his career. He’s up to 1,071 yards from scrimmage in eight games. That puts him on pace for 2,276, which would be the 13th-most ever.

6A. Saquon Barkley just keeps delivering and it’s incredible to watch. He was banged-up and sore and beat up and just kept answering the bell to the tune of 159 rushing yards, 40 receiving yards, two more touchdowns. The fumble was bad – not sure it was really a fumble – but I love that Kellen Moore went back to Barkley as soon as the Eagles got the ball back and he never let up. Second half he carried 14 times for 98 yards. On the day the Eagles honored the greatest running back in Eagles history – LeSean McCoy – Barkley showed why he’s on pace to have the greatest season ever by an Eagles running back. The numbers are insane: He’s already got 925 rushing yards in half a season, 5.9 yards per carry, 1,071 scrimmage yards, eight touchdowns and we’ve got nine games to go. And great to see Barkley more involved in the pass game, too. Barkley caught 288 passes for 2,100 yards in six years with the Giants but was only 17-for-106 the first seven weeks here. I know he had that bad drop against Atlanta, but he’s a really good receiver and too good to be averaging 15 yards per game. He had season highs with three catches for 40 yards Sunday and that early touchdown. It’s mind-blowing how good he is.
Nick Sirianni had two good weeks, but will catch a lot of flak for his decision-making in this game. He was very aggressive and the decisions didn’t work. I’m okay with most of what he did, but the play-call on 4th & inches was horrible. The Eagles went play-action instead of running the Brotherly Shove. The shove had been stopped twice, but not on 4th & inches. That just isn’t the time to try to throw the ball. The Eagles defense had another good showing. They only allowed 17 points and 215 yards. They had 2 INTs and 2 sacks. Both of the picks were by ILBs (Dean and Zack Baun). When is the last time the Eagles had 2 INTs by LBs? I have no idea. Baun was especially outstanding. He had 10 tackles, a PD, a TFL and the INT. Not bad for a guy learning how to play ILB.

It also showed in how Dean finished the Jaguars off. The linebacker’s pick came on a play that, conceptually, was very much like one Saquon Barkley scored on for the Eagles in the first quarter, with the tailback running a stutter-and-go. In studying the Jags, Dean saw a similar play, repeatedly, on tape. It was just from before this year. “They haven’t done it this year, I don’t think, but I knew their team had it with their running backs,” Dean says. “They dynamic out of the backfield. When I saw him stutter-and-go, I knew he was a primary read. That’s how offenses are. … When he threw the ball in there, I was able to make the play.” And where there was detail in Dean’s study, there was also detail to actually going up and high-pointing the ball. In fact, he credited assistant special teams coordinator Joe Pannunzio for helping him with it. Dean dropped an easy pick in the opener against the Packers. He was pretty mad about it, so he got Pannunzio to throw to him every day. “He throws a lot of balls at me post-practice,” Dean said. “That [play] was for him, to be able to get up and get the ball for him.” Dean did, and thus preserved what had been a good effort until the Eagles eased a little too much off the accelerator in the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, the team, again, got a little snapshot of good it can be.
NFL Week 9 Recap: Philadelphia Eagles 28, Jacksonville Jaguars 23 – PFF
PLAYER OF THE GAME. Jalen Hurts appears to have found his groove. After starting the season with five consecutive single-game passing grades below 71.0, Hurts has now graded above 75.0 in each of his last three games, with this performance (90.9) marking a season-best. Hurts completed 19-of-25 passes for 238 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions, recording a season-high three big-time throws and no turnover-worthy plays. He was particularly effective on deep passes, connecting on all four attempts of 20-plus yards for 127 yards and two touchdowns, generating a perfect 158.3 passer rating on those throws. As always, Hurts was a force on the ground, adding 66 yards, one touchdown, and three first downs on 13 rushing attempts. Two of those carries went for 10 or more yards, and he averaged 5.1 yards per carry on the day.

Next Gen Stats Insight from Jaguars-Eagles (via NFL Pro): Saquon Barkley generated more rushing yards than expected on 55.6% of his carries, his highest rate in a game over the past two seasons. Barkley also caught three receptions on four targets for a season-high 40 yards and a touchdown. He generated +15 receiving yards over expected, his highest mark with the Eagles. NFL Research: Sunday marked Saquon Barkley’s fifth game with 100-plus rushing yards in 2024, the first time in his career in which he’s had five such games in the first eight contests of a season. Eagles running backs only had five such games combined between 2022 and 2023.

Sydney Brown was antsy sitting at his NovaCare Complex locker on Thursday. He understands how things are lined up in a very deep Eagles secondary and he knows that he is still gaining his timing and knocking off some rust after missing all of the spring and summer and the first month of the regular season coming back from a torn ACL suffered last season. But he wants to play. He wants to make his mark. “I’m just naturally aggressive,” he said. On Sunday, he made it happen, flying down in coverage on a Braden Mann punt after the Eagles’ first offensive possession stalled near midfield and punching the ball free from punt returner Austin Trammell. Kelee Ringo dived on the loose ball and recovered at the Jacksonville 20-yard line. Two plays later, quarterback Jalen Hurts connected with running back Saquon Barkley in the right corner of the end zone as Barkley made a sensational over-the-shoulder catch, was able to get his feet down inbounds, and secured the pass for a touchdown. It was the team’s first first-quarter touchdown of the season and it helped get things rolling. “That’s my goal, to impact the game any way I can,” Brown said. “It felt great. I had a great release and it timed up perfectly and I made the hit. Felt great. Glad to do something that helped us win this game.”
Saquon Barkley dominates as Jaguars fall 28-23 to Eagles – Big Cat Country
The Jacksonville Jaguars played a football game on Sunday. If you happened to have missed it, congratulations on your stress-free Sunday. For the rest of you, Sunday’s matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles probably had a familiar feel, similar to the majority of 2024 where the Jacksonville offense starts slow, while the only semblance of life comes via up-tempo/hurry up offense. In this matchup that was barely competitive at the half, Jacksonville’s defense (with significant help from Eagles Coach Nick Sirianni) gave fans an exciting second half. The Jaguars fall to the Philadelphia Eagles in a 28-23 nail-biter at Lincoln Financial Field. The Jaguars stand at 2-7 on the season, are fourth in the AFC South standings, and are projected to have the second pick of the 2025 NFL Draft. Here’s everything you need to know from Jacksonville’s Week 9 loss.

Washington Commanders off to historic start. The Commanders beat the Giants in the Meadowlands to improve to 7-2. Washington leads the NFC East and is off to their best start in 33 years. That year, Washington won their first 11 games en route to a 14-2 finish and a Super Bowl win. Jayden Daniels is the first rookie QB to sweep the Giants in 50 years (even if wins aren’t a QB stat).
Game Recap: The Commanders get a road win over NFC East Giants by a score of 27-22 – Hogs Haven
In recent years, Washington has struggled against the Giants, and in particular against starting quarterback Daniel Jones. But this 2024 iteration of the Commanders is a new and different team; the ghosts that have haunted the franchise for the past couple of decades appear to have been exorcised, and a new day seems to have dawned. Getting the win in New Jersey today to earn a season sweep of the Giants would be a significant step in closing the book on the old history and moving forward with the new story of Washington football. The Commanders would have to win this game without starting running back, Brian Robinson, who was out with a hamstring injury.
The Dallas Cowboys lost on Sunday, and potentially in a bigger way than just the game, against the Atlanta Falcons. As the fourth quarter began quarterback Dak Prescott was seen on the broadcast being tended to with what many assumed was a hand injury. While it was ultimately revealed that Prescott did have a hand issue, Jerry Jones said after that there is no concern with the hand, but he was quickly ruled out with a hamstring injury. The FOX broadcast went on to speculate when Prescott may have injured his hamstring, but it wasn’t until after the game that more clarity was fully revealed. Prescott noted that the injury was “something he never felt before” which is certainly not what you want to hear.
CeeDee Lamb will undergo MRI on AC joint issue in right shoulder – PFT
Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb will undergo an MRI on his injured right shoulder on Monday. Todd Archer of ESPN reports that Lamb is dealing with an AC joint issue in his shoulder. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said after the loss to the Falcons that he’s hopeful Lamb can play through the injury as he did Sunday.
3 things we learned from the Giants’ 27-22 loss to the Commanders – Big Blue View
Are Brian Daboll’s days as head coach numbered? I cannot understand Daboll’s approach to the game today. If I counted correctly, 21 of the Giants’ first 25 offensive plays were rushes. A couple of them may have been scrambles, but most were designed. I don’t mind a rush-heavy offense when you don’t have confidence in your quarterback. This started to remind me of Joe Judge’s final game as Giants’ head coach, though (also at MetLife vs. Washington). All that was missing was the surrender formation. On the rare occasions Daniel Jones did try to pass, it was all short stuff for most of the first half. Jones finished the half 4 of 6 for 0 yards, -8 total including sacks. One of the passing plays of course was the Jones fumble as he tried to dump off a screen pass to Devin Singletary and was met by Dante Fowler, who had blown past backup left tackle Chris Hubbard. I think Jones was looking downfield and only tried the screen when he saw Fowler coming out of the corner of his eye but he should have eaten that ball.
Breaking news: Raiders fire Luke Getsy, Rich Scangarello, James Cregg – Silver And Black Pride
As mentioned above, the Raiders quarterback and offensive line situations have been poor this season. Thus, the team has also decided to part ways with quarterbacks coach Rich Scagarello and offensive line coach James Cregg. So, the team is moving on from three offensive coaches ahead of the bye week.
