Other Giant observations
Azeez Ojulari’s recent surge could speed up the end of his Giants tenure | New York Post
“I’m not thinking about it at all, for real,” Ojulari told The Post. “I’m just all-in on this game right now, and whatever happens, happens. I’m not stressing it…When you’re out there, you gotta play 100 percent. You can’t be thinking about [injuries] because that’s gonna mess up your game. So that was something you gotta get over, too, and I feel like I’ve been solid this year.”
Giants sacking the quarterback at historic rate

Giants storyline to watch: Giants rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers is looking to bounce back from a game in which he had two key drops in Pittsburgh. He’s especially motivated against a Washington team that couldn’t stop him in the first meeting. Nabers had 10 catches for 127 yards and a touchdown in that matchup. He’s itching for another big game after two pedestrian performances coming off a concussion.
Giants can look to Sunday’s opponent as reason for hope in another tough season | The Athletic
The problem for the Giants defense has been explosive plays on the ground. They have allowed 10 carries of 20-plus yards, tied for second-most in the league. They’ve surrendered 27 rushes of 12-plus yards, tied for the most in the league. The Commanders offense is tied for second with 10 runs of 20-plus yards.
“We just got to continue to eliminate the explosives,” Bowen said. “Those are what’s killing us right now. We’re giving up those four to five to six runs a game that are chunk plays that we got to do a good job of working to eliminate.”
The Biggest Change in Giants QB Daniel Jones’s Game (And Why It’s Doing Him In) | SI.com
The biggest difference has been Jones’s mobility. While Jones has obviously been cleared to return after suffering a torn ACL last year, his lack of willingness to move around in the pocket when the pressure is coming his way is a growing concern that leaves one to wonder if perhaps he, nearly one year to the day, is still not fully all the way back.
Per Pro Football Focus, Jones is credited with allowing 20 of the 83 pressures against him (18.2%) and six of the 25 sacks he’s absorbed this season. The 18.2% is the fourth-highest among quarterbacks who have a minimum of 75 dropbacks when under pressure.

Nabers, too, has quickly become the best player in New York’s offense. Nabers has more targets than any rookie (and is second among all receivers), and he’s third in his class in receiving yards. The Giants’ Week 4 game against the Cowboys encapsulated the way the Giants have come to rely on him through the first half of his season. He finished that game with 15 targets and likely would have had 20 had he not left the game with a concussion. Nabers is shifty, plays the ball in the air at a high level, and he can play inside or out.
Giants couldn’t have picked a worse time to need a new franchise QB | NJ.com
The Giants need to move on from Daniel Jones. There’s little doubt about that. His deep ball struggles and poor decision-making have lowered the team’s ceiling for six seasons — with the 2022 outlier being the lone exception — and he definitely should not see a seventh in East Rutherford.
Dabs’ Digest: Week 9 conversation with Coach Brian Daboll | Giants.com
Daboll: “(Azeez Ojulari) is another example of being ready when your number’s called and making the most of your opportunities. If you’re not a starter, keeping a right mindset, continuing to work, continuing to improve your craft out at practice, and when you get an opportunity, you make the most of it. I think that’s just another example of Azeez doing the right things when he wasn’t playing as much as he’s playing now. So, he’s ready when he has to play a lot, and he’s produced for us. Those people that work their tails off, that maybe aren’t the starters, that do get an opportunity to go ahead and do those things, they earn playing time and they earn opportunity because they’re producing.”

New York Giants vs. Commanders: 5 things to know about Week 9 | USAToday.com
The Giants are 2-6 to start the season after a sloppy showing in Pittsburgh on Monday Night Football, falling 26-18 to the Steelers. It is the seventh time in the last eight seasons the Giants have begun with a 2-6 (or worse) record after eight games.
New York’s finest? Giants, Jets have racked up more than a decade of struggles | FOX Sports
The returns for Schoen are mixed. His drafts haven’t been great, but he did make a bold trade for edge rusher Brian Burns. And don’t forget he helped piece together a playoff team in his first season. His decision to pay quarterback Daniel Jones (four years, $160 million) instead of running back Saquon Barkley isn’t aging well, but Mara seems committed to letting him find a new QB and build this team his way for a few more years.
While the jury is out on Daboll as a head coach, he’s still a respected offensive mind and there is a feeling in the organization that he’s the right guy to groom the next quarterback — whomever that turns out to be. He’s also close to Schoen, so barring a disaster he’ll be back in 2025. He just might not get more than that.
Revisiting 15 NFL trades at last year’s deadline. Which ones paid off? Which ones didn’t? | The Athletic
The trade: Seahawks get DE Leonard Williams from Giants for 2024 second-round and 2025 fifth-round picks
The verdict: Win. Williams came right in and helped solidify Seattle’s defensive front. He started 10 games, recording 41 tackles, 11 quarterback hits, four sacks and a pass deflection. He then signed a three-year, $64.5 million contract extension with the Seahawks. The Giants, meanwhile, used that second-round pick to draft safety Tyler Nubin, who has 52 tackles, a forced fumble and fumble recovery in eight starts.
This week’s opponent
Game status | Frankie Luvu active for Sunday vs. Giants, Brian Robinson questionable | Commanders.com
Washington Commanders linebacker Frankie Luvu is expected to play in Sunday’s division matchup against the New York Giants, coach Dan Quinn confirmed in his Friday press conference. Luvu missed practice on Wednesday and Thursday with a shin injury. He did practice on Friday and was limited in the Commanders’ walkthrough.
Brian Robinson Jr. (hamstring) was limited throughout the week and will be questionable to play against the Giants, while ackle Cornelius Lucas has been ruled out with an ankle injury.
Analyzing the matchups that could define the NFL in Week 9 | PFF
Daniels’ 93.7 PFF overall grade is the second highest of any quarterback on play action, where the rookie has completed 73.3% of his passes and averaged 9.3 yards per attempt. When these two teams squared off in Week 2, Daniels completed all eight of his play-action attempts for 63 yards but was held without a big-time throw, recording just a 60.0 PFF passing grade. If the Giants’ defense can stand tall against play fakes, they may have a fighting shot in Week 9.
Robert Griffin III couldn’t be happier for Jayden Daniels, Washington: ‘He has invigorated the city’ | Andscape.com
“But the way that you feel when he’s on the field, you would think he was leading the league in touchdown passes, leading the league in passing yards and all of that. It’s because Washington is winning and not asking the world of Jayden Daniels. So, when they need the world from him, like they did on that Hail Mary, he delivers. It’s a beautiful recipe for success. As he continues to grow and develop, he’s not trying to do too much. He’s not trying to put the team on his back. It’s just natural for him. And that’s what makes it so exciting. I am so happy for him.
