Probably not, but it’s worth discussing
The New York Giants could use help at cornerback, and an interesting name has surfaced on the trade market with the NFL trade deadline just a week away. The Los Angeles Rams have given two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Tre’Davious White permission to seek a trade.
White, 29, visited the Giants during the offseason but ultimately signed a one-year, $4.25 million contract with the Rams, $3.25 million of which was guaranteed.
White was a first-round pick by the Buffalo Bills in 2017. He spent seven seasons with the Bills and made the Pro Bowl in 2019 and 2020. Giants GM Joe Schoen joined the Bills as assistant GM in May of 2017, after the Bills selected White, and was witness in Buffalo to the best seasons of White’s career.
White, 29, has been plagued by injuries the past few seasons. He suffered a torn ACL in 2021 and a torn Achilles tendon in 2023 and has played in just 14 of a possible 41 regular-season games during that span.
White played in the Rams’ first four games this season, but has been inactive for the last three.
“He’s been such a pro about the way he’s handled obviously a not-ideal situation for him,” Rams coach Sean McVay said. “If you guys saw the way he’s practiced, the way that he’s been a pro in every sense of the word, and approaches some things where, he hasn’t been active the last three weeks. Guy wants an opportunity to be able to compete, and we love him here. We’d like to be able to keep him here, but if that is something that he and his agent want to be able to explore, we’re obviously respectfully understanding of that. And so the answer is yes, we’ve allowed them to be able to talk to some teams to see if that’s a possibility.”
After his injuries, there is a question regarding how much White has left. He has never had a passer rating against above 79.9 in his career, but had a 138.4 passer rating against in four games with Los Angeles.
White gave up 12 completions in 18 targets for a career-worst 66.7% completion rate, and has missed a career-worst 25% of his tackle attempts this season.
Still, with lots of questions at cornerback and familiarity with the player, might the Giants be a landing spot for White?
My feeling is, no. Even with Deonte Banks’ issues and the depth issues at cornerback, a past his prime cornerback with a recent history of major injuries is not a player a 2-6 team building for the future should be chasing.
