Giants news, 10/26: Jermaine Eluemunor misses practice, Evan Neal, John Mara, more headlines

New York Giants news for Saturday

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

From Big Blue View

Other Giant observations

John Mara’s Giants declaration sent clear message in locker room | New York Post

“I respect Mr. Mara for saying that because they’ve got the right people in here,’’ defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, in his sixth season with the team, said Thursday. “It’s hard to build a culture if you keep recycling and you’ve got to keep starting over. They’re doing a good job getting the right people in here. This is the best team I’ve probably been a part of since I’ve been here. We’ve just got to find a way to get it done on Sunday.’’

Right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor told The Post: “I think Daboll is a hell of a freaking coach and a hell of a game planner.’’

“Having had three full regimes in my time here, the first five years, is not what you need in a franchise,’’ WR Darius Slayton told The Post. “So, I definitely understand where [Mara’s message] is coming from. I feel like nowadays, there’s so much, ‘Oh, these guys aren’t getting it done, so get them out of here.’ ’’

“I’ll leave a lot of that private”

Giants leadership gets vote of confidence, but team’s past proves how fast things can change | The Athletic

But the Giants have been no match for the Steelers’ stability. Pittsburgh has had three head coaches since 1969: Chuck Noll from 1969-91, Bill Cowher from 1992-2006 and Tomlin from 2007-present. Compare that to the Giants, who are on their fourth head coach since Tom Coughlin was cast aside in 2016. The Giants have had a losing record in nine of the past 11 seasons.

Mara desperately wants to replicate the Steelers’ continuity. A desire to be more patient is at the heart of his commitment to Schoen and Daboll. But the only way to duplicate the Steelers’ stability is to win. That crucial ingredient has been missing for the Giants during this tumultuous stretch.

Is it important to remind everyone that there are still 10 games to be played?

Daboll: “I think that’s a losing mentality. You focus on one game at a time. That’s it. You focus on one game at a time. You don’t focus on the past. You don’t focus on the future. You focus on what you need to do to win a game.”

Cornerback Andru Phillips is proving to be a gem in a strong 2024 Giants draft class | PFF

Phillips is locking down his opposition: He has allowed only 11 receptions for 46 yards and a position-leading 4.2 yards per reception rate. The rookie has yet to surrender a touchdown this season while letting up only two first downs into his coverage, both league-best marks.

PFF WAR indicates Phillips has been the sixth-most valuable rookie cornerback (0.09 wins above replacement) this season, not far behind first-place Quinyon Mitchell of the Eagles, at 0.12. However, the cornerbacks ahead of him have all played at least 50 more snaps, which factors into the WAR number.

T.J. Watt: Jermaine Eluemunor embraces daunting assignment vs Steelers | The Record

Before he showed up on the injury report, Eluemunor detailed what he sees from arguably the best defensive end in the game.

“When they highlight T.J. Watt on the broadcast to show how great he is, and he is, I’m well aware that I’m going to be in that circle, too,” Eluemunor said. “This is the kind of matchup you want. You want to challenge yourself against the best. But if you don’t bring some level of confidence in your own game, he’s going to embarrass you. And no one wants to be embarrassed, I certainly don’t, so I’m going to bring it and do my best to compete at a high level.”

Lawrence Taylor reuniting with Bill Belichick on Omaha’s ‘ManningCast’ Monday | New York Post

Lawrence Taylor will be joining his former defensive coordinator Bill Belichick with Peyton and Eli Manning on Omaha Productions’ ESPN2 simulcast of Giants vs. Steelers on Monday. The appearance will be during the first half, where Belichick is a regular fixture on the program throughout the season.

9. New York Giants: QB Drew Allar – Penn State. At 6-foot-4, Allar has ideal size and field-stretching arm strength. He’s highly effective working the middle of the field and throwing with anticipation into zone coverage, and frequently progresses to his second or third read on time.

41. New York Giants: OT Josh Simmons – Ohio State.

This week’s opponent

Smith, Wilson have great expectations for Steelers offense | Steelers.com

“I don’t care how many reps you have in the NFL, when you haven’t played in a while, some of the practice reps, you’d love to come out of the gates smoking,” Smith said of Wilson, who was making his first start of the season after missing the first six games with a calf injury. He and I talked about it. I give a lot of credit to him because that’s not easy. First drive was OK. Ended up getting three points. Next couple drives, a couple things obviously didn’t go our way. That’s a tough spot to be in. You find out a lot about a lot of people.”

Playing with their fifth combination of starting offensive linemen in the win against the Jets, the Steelers passed their first test against a sack-happy front, and an even tougher challenge emerges in QB Russell Wilson’s second start. The Giants lead the league with 31 sacks, and Dexter Lawrence II, whom coach Mike Tomlin called “a problem,” leads all pass rushers with nine sacks. Wilson was sacked just once by the Jets, but the Giants will undoubtedly go after the veteran quarterback on Monday night.
