The Detroit Lions released their Week 8 injury designations and they will be without Josh Paschal for their match up with the Titans.
The Detroit Lions and Tennessee Titans have released their injury designations ahead of their Week 8 matchup and the Lions continue to run into obstacles with their edge rushers.
Let’s take a look at the latest injury report and get you up to date with what we know. Note that any changes from yesterday’s report will be bolded.
Ruled OUT
- DL Josh Paschal (illness)
- G Christian Mahogany (illness, NFI) —Still on NFI: 4 days remain in the evaluation window
While Paschal is listed with an illness, he explained to the media (specifically MLive’s Ben Raven) on Friday that he is being held out of this game because of something that came up during one of his annual cancer screenings. In 2018, Paschal was diagnosed with malignant melanoma in his right foot and was out of football for a year. He has been cancer-free since his treatments and assured Raven that the cancer has not returned. He would go on to explain that this situation revolved around his strength, and declined to elaborate more than that, beyond noting that he was hoping to return to action next week.
“Fortunately, it’s not something long term. It’s just something that I had to take care of. I had to knock it out. It was something small. Something that they found that I had to take care of earlier this week.”

After losing Aidan Hutchinson, Marcus Davenport, Derrick Barnes, and John Cominsky to injured reserve, not having Paschal available this week leaves the Lions’ roster even thinner on the edge.
The Lions are expected to use a community approach to filling in gaps. That includes leaning on remaining edge rushers James Houston and Isaiah Thomas (who was recently signed off the Bengals practice squad), as well as a possible game-day elevation of Al-Quadin Muhammad and/or Isaac Ukwu. Additionally, Levi Onwuzurike (who spends about half his snaps on the edge) and rookie defensive lineman Mekhi Wingo (who saw all of his snaps last week come on the edge) could see more time outside.
Mahogany completed his final practice available during the evaluation process, and because the Lions don’t have to make a decision on his status until next week, he was ruled out for this game. Campbell said he would discuss Mahogany’s situation with general manager Brad Holmes following this week’s game, but he sounded hopeful they could find room for him on the 53-man roster.
“I will tell you this, he’s gotten better every week,” Campbell said of Mahogany. “He’s made strides every week and that has been very noticeable. So, standing up here in front of you (right now), I think it would be hard to say that you don’t want to continue this progress, that would be hard to say. But until I talk to Brad, I won’t know for sure on that.”
It’s worth noting that the Lions do have an open spot on the roster available to them, but they also are currently carrying 10 offensive linemen, and will likely need help with their edge rusher situation. Therefore, some roster juggling could be in order early next week.
Questionable
None.
Not listed with an injury designation
- LT Taylor Decker (rest)
- LG Graham Glasgow (rest)
- C Frank Ragnow (rest)
- RG Kevin Zeitler (groin)
- DL Levi Onwuzurike (rest)
The players in this section are not listed with an injury designation and will be good to go for this Sunday’s game. Returning Zeitler will give the Lions’ offensive line a boost in physicality, something they’ll need against the Titans’ defensive front.
