There has been a notable difference on the Cincinnati Bengals defense over the past few weeks and it is directly linked to the improved health of the defensive line.
On the interior, BJ Hill took 63 snaps, and Sheldon Rankins added 50. They were aided by solid contributions from rookies Kris Jenkins (32 snaps) and McKinnley Jackson (22 snaps.)
Trey Hendrickson led the way on the edge with 59 snaps. Sam Hubbard added 45. Myles Murphy and Joseph Ossai provided a solid rotation with 34 and 30 snaps, respectively.
There were also increased roles for linebacker Akeem Davis-Gaither (18 snaps) and safety Jordan Battle (19 snaps). Battle saw increased action even before Geno Stone’s injury, and if it lingers, he will likely make the start vs. Philly.
It’s also notable that DJ Ivey saw four snaps after returning from the injury that ended his 2023 season.
On the offensive side of the ball, Chase Brown continues to be the Bengals lead back, taking 32 snaps to Zack Moss’s 27. Brown carried the ball significantly more, totaling 44 yards in 15 carries. Moss had only 7 yards on a mere six carries. Moss did, however, have more production in the passing game with 33 yards on three receptions, compared to Brown’s two catches for nine yards.
Drew Sample and Erick All took the exact same number of snaps (28) at tight end, but make no mistake, this is still an 11-person team. Ja’Marr Chase led receivers with 48 snaps, and Tee Higgins was not far behind with 45. Andrei Iosivas was just a bit off of that with 39 snaps.
Tight end Mike Gesicki was also a notable contributor, taking 17 snaps on the day. Jermaine Burton is another notable pass-catcher who had three reps with the game after being inactive a week ago.
Rookie center Matt Lee saw his first action on offense, but thankfully, not in relief of Ted Karras. With Orlando Brown sidelined. Cody Ford became the team’s left tackle. As a result, three snaps as a sixth offensive lineman went to Lee.
