Your Sunday night open thread
The 4-2 Pittsburgh Steelers will host the 2-4 New York Jets on Sunday Night Football in Week 7.
This game features unexpected off-field drama from both teams, as the Steelers make a mid-season quarterback change and Aaron Rodgers has essentially assumed control of the Jets’ franchise.
The Steelers have been one of the surprises of the season, with Justin Fields leading them to four wins. The Jets, meanwhile, have been one of big disappointments as Aaron Rodgers-lead offense has stumbled after being projected to be a potential Super Bowl contender.
The Jets are a 2.5-point favorite on the road, per FanDuel sports book.
Chris’ pick: I’ll go with the Jets on the road for this game.
There are some pretty significant unknowns on both sides, with the Jets having fired head coach Robert Saleh and demoting offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett. On the Steelers’ side, Mike Tomlin made the surprise decision to switch from Justin Fields to Russell Wilson at quarterback. Fields didn’t play his way off the field by any means, but Tomlin seems to believe that Wilson offers more upside as a pure passer.
But having your first game in a new offense — and first game for everyone else with a new quarterback — against the Jets’ defense is double-tough. Mike Tomlin might have the last laugh and be proven correct by starting Russell Wilson, but there’s too much of an unknown to pick them.
I don’t expect the Jets to do a LOT against the Steelers’ own defense, but just enough to edge out Pittsburgh.
