Cam Akers is headed back to the Vikings again

For the second time in his NFL career, Cam Akers has been traded…to the Minnesota Vikings.

The former L.A. Rams second round pick was traded from the Texans to the Vikings on Tuesday, a little more than a year after the Rams traded him to the Vikings last September. For the second year in a row, Akers was traded with a conditional sixth round pick in exchange for a conditional seventh round pick.

It’s a sign that a player is having trouble finding a fit when he plays for three times in a year, but technically he’s played for four teams since this is his second stint with Minnesota.

The Rams picked Akers in the second round in 2020, expecting him to take over for Todd Gurley as L.A.’s running back of the future. He struggled as a rookie and missed virtually the entire 2021 season with a torn Achilles, miraculously returning for the final game of the season and playoffs. Akers struggled mightily in those playoffs despite the Rams winning the Super Bowl. There was talk of not meshing with Sean McVay and expectations he would be traded in 2022, but the Rams brought him back to the team and he finished out the season.

After one game in 2023 however, the Rams traded Akers to the Vikings and opened the door for Kyren Williams to become the starter.

Akers rushed for 138 yards and 3.6 yards per carry in six games with the Vikings last season. He had 40 carries for 147 with Houston this year, averaging 3.7 yards per carry.
