The Linc – Nick Sirianni “can’t get out of his own way”

The Linc – Nick Sirianni “can’t get out of his own way”

Philadelphia Eagles news and links for 10/15/24.

Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links …

NFL Week 6 Under Review: Lamar Jackson Has Never Been Better – The Ringer
What I think about Sirianni or what you think about Sirianni doesn’t matter all that much. But what he seems to be forgetting is that what owner Jeffrey Lurie thinks about him does matter. Sirianni’s self-awareness at this point might be as bad as his offensive scheming. He is supposed to be operating as a CEO-type head coach. Instead, he is operating like an overzealous intern who needs to be meticulously managed. His behavior, from the sideline antics to the botched game management decisions to the bizarre press conferences, seems to run counter to what the person who determines whether he gets to keep his job actually wants. Philadelphia fans have long had a fascinating complex about feeling entitled to rip their own coaches and players, but when outsiders do the same thing, they start defending the very same people. That’s not happening this week when it comes to Sirianni. The Eagles are 3-2 and won a game on Sunday. They are talented enough to win the division, have an easy remaining schedule, and play in a wide-open conference. Yet no one in Philadelphia really cares because the coach has become a distraction—one who can’t get out of his own way.

Nick Sirianni apologizes after chirping at fans – NBCSP
Upon further review? Nick Sirianni knows he messed up. In the wake of a massive fan outcry after his post-game antics Sunday, Sirianni on Monday apologized for his behavior in his weekly day-after-the-game Zoom call with the Philly media. “What I was really doing, I was trying to bring energy yesterday, energy, enthusiasm, and I’m sorry and disappointed on how my energy was directed at the end of the game,” he said. “And, you know, my energy should be all in on coaching, motivating and celebrating with our guys. And so I’ve got to have better wisdom and discernment of when to use that energy and that wasn’t the time.”

Eagles-Browns snap counts: Signs of life from Bryce Huff, Grant Calcaterra steps up, and more – BGN
Grant Calcaterra nearly played the entire game with Dallas Goedert leaving early due to a hamstring injury. It was a career day for him with four targets for four catches and 67 yards. Calcaterra was targeted just four times all of last season (despite Goedert missing three games)! And his first target in 2023 didn’t come until the Week 15 Christmas game against the New York Giants. Maybe continue use this guy more than never?

Why your NFL team won, lost in Week 6 – PFF
Why the Eagles won: The Eagles offense looked much improved with their top two targets, A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, back on the field. Brown caught six passes for 117 yards and a touchdown, earning a 90.6 receiving grade, while Smith caught three passes for 64 yards and a score. The explosive element of the offense is back. Why the Browns lost: The Browns’ offensive line has struggled all season, and that continued by allowing 16 pressures and three sacks against the Eagles. Deshaun Watson was pressured on 50% of his dropbacks, too. There might not be a worse offense in the NFL.

Eagles film review: Cooper DeJean’s encouraging first start – PhillyVoice
DeJean was strong in coverage. Let’s start with what I thought was his best coverage rep of the day. The Browns are running a fake bubble screen, with DeJean’s man feigning like he’s just a blocker on the play before trying to take DeJean deep. DeJean doesn’t bite, and then stays in phase throughout the route. Well done.

Spadaro: The time is now for rookies Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper DeJean – PE.com
Every step they’ve taken, every situation they’ve encountered, both Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean have handled with maturity and effort and earnestness. As total professionals. Which is something you don’t generally get from NFL rookies, but that’s what it has been like for Mitchell, the Eagles’ first-round draft pick in April, and from DeJean, the team’s No. 2 pick. Both are now central figures in Vic Fangio’s defense. And the team isn’t interested in looking back. The emphasis is on building and growing and improving every step of the way.

Washington Commanders Injury Update: Jonathan Allen likely out for the season with significant pec injury – Hogs Haven
The Washington Commanders have been relatively healthy this season, but they have potentially lost a starting defensive lineman for the season. Jonathan Allen suffered a pec injury during Derrick Henry’s 7-yard touchdown run near the end of the 3rd quarter. Allen was on the sidelines after being evaluated, but he was quickly ruled out of the game. Tom Pelissero reported the injury and said that Allen will get a second opinion, but the expectation is that he’ll miss the rest of the season.

Cowboys vs. Lions stock report: Dak Prescott, Mike McCarthy, Jerry Jones all down – Blogging The Boys
Like with his quarterback, Mike McCarthy has also been asked to swim upstream or else. He is in a tough spot. But he is not helping himself. This is a team that seemed to check out and did so in the most disorganized way possible. McCarthy is failing as both a head coach and a play-caller at the moment. It is difficult to find something that he is doing well. Beyond the fact that McCarthy’s team hasn’t really showed up for the season, he seems to not have as well. Consider that he kicked a field goal while down 34-6 at one point. Seriously. This happened! People will say that it was 4th and 12… but the score was 34-6! What’s more is even if you somehow want to believe that order can be restored here, the Cowboys were clearly losing this game very early on (relatively speaking). Practically speaking you could have just accepted that, acknowledged that you are 3-3 and lived to fight another day. McCarthy chose not to do this. He insisted on playing for pride (lol) or whatever you want to call it and kept starters in as the humiliation continued on. In the third quarter things got tense when it looked like Dak may have hurt his hand while hitting it on a helmet. Like with choosing to continually take the ball when winning the opening coin toss, it all smells of extreme desperation.

Cowboys stadium Twitter account caught blurring out score on Week 6 attendance graphic – SB Nation
The Dallas Cowboys are sitting at 3-3 after losing in embarrassing fashion to the Detroit Lions in Week 6. The Cowboys lost 47-9 and it was an endlessly embarrassing performance. They nearly gave up 50 points at home and decided it made sense to attempt a field goal down 34-6 midway through the third quarter. The embarrassment didn’t end there. Shortly after the game ended, the X (formerly Twitter) account for the Cowboys stadium decided to post a tweet with the attendance total. 93,644 fans were on hand for a truly embarrassing display. And somehow, AT&T stadium decided to make the result all the more embarrassing.

Eagles-Giants odds, Week 7: Giants will be home underdogs in NFC East clash – Big Blue View
The Eagles are looking to bounce back after suffering injuries and early struggles this season. Their recent matchups have averaged a total of 45.8 points per game, but they have only managed to hit the over in two of their six contests. The Eagles also have not covered the spread when favored by 3.5 points or more this season in two games. The Giants are 3-1 against the spread when playing as at least 3.5-point underdogs this year. As they prepare for this crucial matchup, the Giants aim to get their first home win of the season, though they’ll face a tough challenge against an Eagles offense led by quarterback Jalen Hurts, running back Saquon Barkley, and wide receivers A.J. Brown and Devonta Smith.

Reports: Jets give Haason Reddick permission to seek a trade – Gang Green Nation
We could be nearing the end of one of the most bizarre sagas in recent NFL memory. The Jets acquired Reddick from the Eagles for a third round pick in the offseason, but he has yet to report to the team over his contract situation. The Jets almost certainly would not receive equal value to what they paid for Reddick, but the team might be at the point where it is ready to cut its losses.
