Your Monday Night Football open thread
It’s a showdown in the AFC East as the New York Jets take on the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football to cap off Week 6.
The 2-3 Jets have once again captured the sports pages with the surprising decision to fire (now former) head coach Robert Saleh following an embarrassing performance against the Minnesota Vikings in front of the whole world in London last week. That decision opened a Pandora’s Box of potential ramifications, but the only one the Jets are concerned with right now is whether they can start quickly with a new offensive coordinator.
The Bills, meanwhile, are looking to move past a rough loss to the Houston Texans that dropped them to 3-2 on the season. Buffalo is still in charge of the AFC East, but they’re only up a game on the Jets, and this game could have big ramifications for both teams’ seasons.
Buffalo is a 1.5-point favorite on the road, per FanDuel sports book.
Chris’ Picks
I’m going to go with the Bills on the road, but I can’t say I feel strongly, or even particularly good, about the pick.
Frankly, I’m not sure Josh Allen is completely healthy following this hard hit against the Texans last week. He only completed 9 of 30 passes a week ago, and the Jets have a very good defense with one of the highest hurry and pressure rates in the NFL. If Allen isn’t healthy, he could struggle.
The behind-the-scenes chaos on the Jets’ side of things is another wildcard in this match-up. There’s the possibility that the decision to fire head coach Robert Saleh could fracture the locker room, particularly if things turn against the Jets. On the other hand, the Jets have replaced Nathaniel Hackett with Todd Downing at offensive coordinator, which could take the Bills’ defense by surprise. This is a game that really could go either — or any — way. I’m just erring on the side of Josh Allen being a very difficult quarterback to defend if he’s at all healthy.
