Bills at Jets: 6 storylines to watch for in Week 6
The Buffalo Bills will turn to the next page of their 2024 NFL regular season.
Following a 23-20 loss to the Houston Texans in Week 5, the Bills (3-2) will visit the New York Jets (2-3) at MetLife Stadium in their upcoming matchup.
But before we even get to kickoff, there will be a lot of Bills-related discussions and conversations to be had throughout the coming days.
With that, here are six storylines to watch for during the lead up to Bills against the Jets:
New coach on deck
(USAT)
The biggest news of the NFL week will be right in front of the Bills. The Jets have fired head coach Robert Saleh and named defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich as the interim. In terms of the Bills, they will need to be ready for this. A team usually gets a “new coach bump” which leads to a rejuvenated locker room.
And an old friend got demoted
(USAT)
After Ulbrich was named interim head coach he changed up his staff. Nate Hackett is the offensive coordinator in New York. However, he was stripped of play-calling duties. Now passing-game coordinator Todd Downing will do so.
Again, the Bills have to be ready for… potentially a completely new offense facing them in Week 6. Also, it’s worth noting, this is the same Hackett that was Buffalo’s offensive coordinator from 2013 to 2014 on Doug Marrone’s coaching staff.
Prime-time lights
(USAT)
All that said, this game will be in the spotlight… the “Monday Night Football” one. The Bills and Jets finish off the weekend of football. And it’s Buffalo’s last one for awhile. The next time the Bills feature on prime time is in Week 13 against the San Francisco 49ers on “Sunday Night Football.”
Righting the ship

The Bills offense did not look right during their loss to the Texans. In fact, they looked terrible. Quarterback Josh Allen’s lack of talent around him really showed up for the first time. Regardless of who is playing alongside him, Buffalo offensive coordinator Joe Brady has to earn his pay this week as the Jets have one of the best defenses in the NFL. New York has allowed 292.3 yards per game. That’s the third best in football.
McDermott’s look

After the way the Bills handled the clock at the end of their loss to the Texans… a lot of NFL analysts and football fans came for Sean McDermott. His questionable decision making led to the loss.
Now McDermott has to put all that behind him and focus at the task at hand in the Jets. Whoever wins this one is in first place of the AFC East. If McDermott makes another poor choice like last week, he could be on the hot seat.
Injury watch

As has been a trend throughout this season, the Bills’ injury report will be watched very closely. We knew wide receiver Khalil Shakir (ankle) would be on it and Buffalo struggled without him. Can he return? Making matters worse, Pro Bowl running back James Cook has a foot injury now.
