Wednesday injury report: Frank Ragnow, Brian Branch return

The Detroit Lions released their Week 6 initial injury report for Dallas Cowboys week.

The Detroit Lions are back on the road in Week 6, as they travel to Texas to take on the Dallas Cowboys. The Lions are coming off a bye week, and as a result, they’ve changed their practice schedule for the week.

Typically, Lions players would have Tuesday off, but this week, Detroit elected to hold a full practice instead, followed by a walkthrough on Wednesday. Because the Lions play on Sunday, they are required to produce their first injury report of the week on Wednesday, but with it only being a walkthrough, all player participation levels are estimates based on what coaches believe the player would have been able to do if the Lions had a full practice.

“You get a day to prime (players) back up off a lot of days off,” coach Dan Campbell said of the Lions approach to practice this week. “So you’ve primed them up and then the next day you’re ready to give them the install—or get them ready for the opponent—and so you’ve got two good days of work. And one of those (practices), like yesterday, was a padded day for us. A longer practice, pads, we get real good looks, and then you get a day off. So, I just think it helps their recovery, it’s better-quality work, it’s more efficient.”

With this in mind, let’s take a look at Wednesday’s injury report and get you up to date with what we know. Note that any changes from last week’s report will be bolded.

Injured reserve, Non-Football injury list

Let’s start with the good news: Christian Mahogany has begun practicing and is currently being evaluated for a potential elevation to the active roster. The Lions are just two days into his 21-day evaluation window, and with a wealth of talent on the offensive line, it wouldn’t be surprising to see them take their time with this process.

Unfortunately, the news is not all positive, as the Lions recently received some bad news on Derrick Barnes’ injury status, and it appears he may be lost for the season.

“I think we will be fortunate to get him at any point this year,” coach Dan Campbell said of Barnes on Monday. “I don’t want to say it’s not going to happen, but I think we would be pretty fortunate if it does.”

Barnes, Davenport, Cominsky, and Moseley are all considered players who could miss the entire season or potentially return late in the year. While Martin could be back soon and Melifonwu’s status is unknown.

Every player eligible practiced on Tuesday and was estimated to have been able to practice in full on Wednesday as well.

Full practice

  • C Frank Ragnow (pec) — Returned to practice
  • S Brian Branch (illness) — Returned to practice
  • G Christian Mahogany (illness, NFI) — Returned to practice

Ragnow is working through a partially torn pectoral muscle and did not practice or play in Week 4, but with an extra week to heal over the bye, he was back on the practice field this week and could find his way back into the starting lineup.

Branch was concussed in Week 3 and was forced to exit the game against the Cardinals. While he cleared his concussion protocols ahead of the Lions Week 4 game, he was hit with an illness and was unable to play against the Seahawks.

“No, he passed the protocol,” Campbell said of Branch on Monday. “He’s been sick and so we don’t know what that is and it’s not worth it (for him to play). I don’t know what it is, I know he’s sick so that’s what it was.”

While slightly unsettling that the Lions “don’t know” what illness Branch was dealing with, returning to practice is a very positive sign for his availability for this weekend’s game.

No longer listed with an injury

  • TE Sam LaPorta (ankle)
  • OT Dan Skipper (ribs)
  • DT Alim McNeill (shoulder)
  • DL Levi Onwuzurike (knee)
  • LB Alex Anzalone (concussion)
  • CB Ennis Rakestraw (hamstring)

All the players in this section are no longer on the injury report.

Cowboys’ initial injury report

Full practice:

  • OT Tyler Guyton (knee)
  • LB Marist Liufau (quad)
  • CB DaRon Bland (foot, returned to practice, still on IR)
  • CB Caelen Carson (shoulder)
  • CB Trevon Diggs (ankle)

Did not practice:

  • G Zack Martin (rest)
  • EDGE Micah Parsons (ankle)
  • LB Nick Vigil (foot)
  • LB Eric Kendricks (calf/shoulder)
  • S Markquese Bell (illness)

Here’s the latest on Micah Parsons, via coach Mike McCarthy on Monday:

“He was in [Monday] for treatment, so I’ll probably have a better gage of that Wednesday — if he has a chance for Detroit. He’s got some work to do. Saw him Saturday before we left. We knew this week was going to be a stretch, so we’ll have a better gage once we get to Wednesday.”
