The Linc – It’s time for Jalen Hurts to stop turning the ball over

Philadelphia Eagles news and links for 10/9/24.

Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links …

The biggest Eagles question at each position coming back from the bye – NBCSP
Quarterback: Can Jalen Hurts get his turnover problem in check? While Hurts has certainly done some good things in the Eagles’ first four games, everything he has done has been overshadowed by his turnovers. He has seven (4 INTs, 3 lost fumbles) through four games and is second to just Will Levis (9) in the NFL. And three of his seven turnovers have come in the red zone. Through four games, Hurts has an interception percentage of 3.0%, which is even higher than his 2.8% in 2023 when he had a career-high 15 interceptions. Dating back to the beginning of 2023, Hurts has thrown 19 interceptions and has lost 8 fumbles — that’s 27 turnovers in 21 games. That’s not good. And according to PFF, Hurts leads the NFL in turnover worthy plays with 11 — his turnover worthy play percentage of 6.7% is the highest in the league among QBs with at least 100 drop backs.

Browns vs Eagles Week 6: Philly has game-changers all over the place – Dawgs By Nature
If there is one quarterback that has had his fair share of struggles this season, it’s Jalen Hurts. Make no mistake, Hurts is a top 15 quarterback in this league but this season he’s been up and down. Injuries do play a part in his play, with both Brown and Smith being out at one point during the season but Hurts has turned the ball over in every single game that he’s played this season: Hurts has a good arm, has the ability to take off as a runner, and it appears his accuracy has improved if you look at his completion percentage this year. However, the turnovers have been his issue and he’s not necessarily great under pressure. For the Browns, pressuring Hurts and forcing turnovers are the only way for the team to have a remote chance to win this game.

Eagles film review: Breaking down the factors behind Jalen Hurts’ turnover problems – Inquirer
Watching each of Hurts’ turnovers along with some of his turnover-worthy plays, there are a handful of common themes that fall squarely on his shoulders rather than a confluence of factors. The most common denominator is Hurts pressing the issue down the field in either late-game situations or when facing third-and-long. In the season opener against the Green Bay Packers, Hurts threw his first interception of the season targeting a tightly covered DeVonta Smith while he worked up the seam. Even on third-and-15, it was a dubious attempt from Hurts considering the traffic in the middle of the field and the field position the Eagles faced deep in their own territory.

Long-range planners. These players have guarantee structures in their deals that mean they aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. 1. Philadelphia Eagles: Jalen Hurts. Hurts’ deal is complex, as the bulk of his compensation comes via a series of annual option bonuses. For example, his base salary for this season is $1.125 million, but he pocketed an extra $38.875 million when the team exercised his option bonus this past spring. Next year, he has a fully guaranteed $1.17 million salary and a fully guaranteed $40.83 million roster bonus. He also has $20.46 million of his 2026 money fully guaranteed already, and the remaining $30.804 million of his 2026 compensation becomes fully guaranteed on the third day of the 2025 league year. Moving on from Hurts after 2025 would result in a dead money cap hit of more than $107 million. Moving on after 2026 would result in a dead cap hit of nearly $53 million, and that’s assuming the Eagles did it before $22 million of his 2027 salary becomes guaranteed on the third day of the 2026 league year. Realistically, Hurts’ contract ties him to the Eagles through 2027 at the very least. But something would have to go very wrong for him to end up cut after the 2026 season.

Devin White released by the Eagles – BGN
The Philadelphia Eagles released veteran linebacker Devin White on Tuesday afternoon, according to an official team announcement. In true news dump fashion, this move was made just about thirty minutes before the Philadelphia Phillies begin a big Game 3 playoff game against the New York Mets. The Eagles originally signed White to a one-year contract worth up to $4.5 million with $3.5 million guaranteed back in March.

Game Review – TB 33, PHI 16 – Iggles Blitz
If you thought the game was frustrating live, it was even worse on re-watch. With several key players out, the Eagles needed players to step up. That didn’t happen. Hurts struggled, finishing 18-30-158. The fumble was a killer. You have to protect the ball better than that. Nakobe Dean missed a bunch of tackles. He also struggled in coverage. The secondary was way too loose in coverage. All of them. They tightened things up in the second half, but not enough. CJGJ was awful at times.

2024 NFL offensive line rankings ahead of Week 6 – PFF
7. Philadelphia Eagles (No change). The Philadelphia Eagles were on a bye in Week 5. After five weeks, the Eagles’ offensive line ranks just 28th in PFF pass-blocking efficiency rating. The unit has surrendered 52 pressures — including nine sacks — on 155 pass plays. Best player: Jordan Mailata Mailata’s 87.7 PFF overall grade ranks third among offensive tackles this season.

Robert Saleh firing leaves Dan Campbell, Nick Sirianni as last coaches hired in 2021 – PFT
Seven new NFL head coaches were hired in 2021. Five of them have now been fired. With Robert Saleh out as head coach of the Jets, only Lions coach Dan Campbell and Eagles coach Nick Sirianni are still on the job from the coaching class of 2021.

Sydney Brown: ‘I am prepared to go’ – PE.com
“There was a moment in the locker room where I’m sitting there crying and I had a moment with Big Dom (Dom DiSandro, team’s senior advisor to the general manager/chief security officer/gameday coaching operations), where he’s talking with me and he’s telling me it’s going to be a process and that I have to keep a positive mindset. I’m sitting there thinking, ‘Am I going to come back and be the same?’ I was thinking about the whole nine-to-12-month process and what it was going to be like for me and everything I was going to go through, and what I got from Dom in that moment was, like, it’s best to have a positive mindset to have a positive outcome. From that moment on, I had my time to grieve about it, and within 12 hours of the injury, I had a plan of when I wanted to be back, what I was going to do … in my mind where I wanted to be at certain points in the process.”

Washington’s ceiling hasn’t been determined yet – Hogs Haven
The Washington Commanders are currently one of the best teams in the NFL, and we still don’t know how good they could be. The consensus power rankings suggest that the Commanders are a top-ten team in the NFL, which is rare for Washington to be at any point in an NFL season. Let your guard down. I know it isn’t easy for some fans, but like Dan Quinn said on his latest “Tell the Truth Mondays,” “Let it ride,” and believe what you’ve seen.

5 points: Observations from the Cowboys win in Week 5 – Blogging The Boys
Fifth Point: Mike McCarthy needs to have more help with challenges. This is just a tiny observation from the game, but one that has been troublesome for McCarthy historically. So far in 2024, the Cowboys head coach has used the challenge flag four times, and the ruling on the field was upheld all four times.

Giants-Bengals Week 6 story lines: Can the Giants win a game at home, and in prime time? – Big Blue View
So, Giants pass rushers have gotten home a lot. On a down-to-down basis, though, the Giants have not been that good at making opposing quarterbacks uncomfortable. The Bengals have one of the league’s most prolific passing offenses with quarterback Joe Burrow, and wide receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. If the Giants allow Burrow to be comfortable, it will be a long night for their secondary.

Jets owner Woody Johnson urges OLB Haason Reddick to end holdout: ‘You’re going to feel welcome’ – NFL.com
Amid the chaos of the NFL’s first head coach change of the 2024 season, the New York Jets also remain at an impasse with outside linebacker Haason Reddick. Jets owner Woody Johnson is hoping to get the holdout resolved and urged Reddick to head on down to the team facility to work things out. “Haason, get in your car, drive down (I-)95 and come to the New York Jets, and we can meet you and give you an escort right in the building,” Johnson said Tuesday during a zoom call with reporters to address the firing of head coach Robert Saleh, “and you’ll fit right in and you’re going to love it here and you’re going to feel welcome and you’re going to accomplish great things with us.”

9 potential New York Jets head coaches for 2025 after Robert Saleh’s firing – SB Nation
Kliff Kingsbury. Kliff Kingsbury has Jayden Daniels playing like an Offensive Rookie of the Year candidate. He also has head coaching experience, with stops at Texas Tech and Arizona with the Cardinals. The thought of a Kingsbury-Rodgers pairing sounds more like a script for an HBO reboot of the old First and Ten series — look it up kids — but should the organization design to move on from Rodgers, or the quarterback himself steps away, Kingsbury might be a candidate. Given his offensive-minded approach, and what he is showing this season for Daniels, he might be the ideal hire to guide a new quarterback’s transition to the NFL.
