The Athletic projects LA to take Notre Dame CB Benajmin Morrison 12th overall in 2025

With the Los Angeles Rams off to a disappointing start to the season, some fans are already turning their attention towards the 2025 NFL Draft. The Athletic released their projected first round on Thursday and sent Notre Dame CB Benjamin Morrison to Los Angeles with the 12th overall selection.

Here’s what Nick Baumgardner had to say about the connection:

Back on the field after missing time in spring with a shoulder injury, Morrison has the burst, quickness and ability to do everything low to the ground that will make him a coveted defender in spring. He can be a versatile corner, in man or zone, and will fit the run with tenacity.

It’s no secret that corner is currently a glaring hole on the Rams’ roster. LA signed veterans Darious Williams and Tre White this offseason in order to temporarily patch things over while they invested draft capital in the defensive line.

Williams injured his hamstring in training camp and missed the first four games with a stint on injured reserve, though he could return as soon as this weekend’s matchup versus the Green Bay Packers. White has played in all four games, though he’s been the obvious weak link in a struggling secondary. The veteran allowed four touchdowns as the nearest defender in coverage over the first three games. While the stat sheet looked improved last week against the Chicago Bears, White did have two costly penalties. One erased a third down sack by rookie Jared Verse and the other gave the Bears the ball on the goal line—and they made the most of the opportunity by scored a touchdown moments later.

Even if Williams sticks around into 2025, it’s clear that the Rams need a more permanent solution at corner. Cobie Durant may be part of the team’s plans but next season will be a contract year for him.

Who is Notre Dame’s Benjamin Morrison?

Morrison is listed at 6-0 with a weight ranging between 185-190 lbs.

Ryan Fowler of The Draft Network says Morrison “is a technically elite corner who projects as a long-term core contributor for an NFL defense.” Fowler’s scouting reporting indicates that the corner will lineup opposite the offense’s top receiver and has shut down capabilities. In man coverage Morrison has the length and technique to press receivers. In zone he has fluid hips and excels when “working at minimal depth where he will smother wideouts… to eliminate pass-catchers from the progression.”

While The Draft Network concludes Morrison is a rare, All-Pro type prospect, they have concerns with his pursuit angles versus the run, a propensity to sit back on his heels, and issues stacking and shedding to slow runs and screens.

It seems the Rams have hit a homerun with Jared Verse, their only first round selection since 2016. Verse is close to becoming one of the top EDGE rushers in the NFL. His former Florida State teammate, Braden Fiske, is also impressing in the early going in Los Angeles. LA has revamped their defensive line over the past two drafts, and it makes sense that they’d invest additional resources into the secondary as they rebuild their defense in a post Aaron Donald world.
