Giants news, 10/3: Malik Nabers, Matthew Adams, Dexter Lawrence, more headlines

New York Giants news for Thursday

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

From Big Blue View

Other Giant observations

2024 NFL First-Quarter All-Pro Team: Derrick Henry, T.J. Watt, Aidan Hutchinson and more | PFF

Defensive Interior: Dexter Lawrence, New York Giants. Lawrence’s 18 total pressures trail only Chris Jones of the Kansas City Chiefs among players on the defensive interior. He has excelled against the run, too, with only Heyward topping his 82.7 run-defense grade.

Daniel Jones and Geno Smith: A QB tale symbolizes Giants’ decade | The Record

Smith replaced Manning once and created such chaos around here. His actual successor, Jones, now essentially plays every game to prove he deserves to keep the job another week.

10 questions on NFL quarterbacks: Early concerns, hot starts | ESPN.com

Jones needs to be one of the league’s best quarterbacks over the final 13 games to be the Giants’ starter beyond this season. Currently, he’s in the middle of the pack in QBR (55.7) and ranked 25th in completion percentage (63.2%). The team already looked to replace him this past offseason. It seems almost certain the Giants will do the same again in next year’s draft, unless Jones proves he’s a Super Bowl-caliber quarterback.

Giants ‘disappointed but not discouraged’ going into Week 5 | ESPN.com

The only primary offense, defense or special teams stats where the Giants are inside the top 10 are sacks and sacks allowed per pass attempt. That alone is a major step in the right direction considering how this roster was built.

The new-look offensive line is allowing sacks on just 6.24% of their pass attempts. That is good for 12th in the NFL. The Giants were dead last averaging a sack every 16.4% of their pass attempts last season. Better pass protection has the Giants a respectable 16th in the NFL with quarterback Daniel Jones averaging 211.5 passing yards per game.

Presser Points: Takeaways from Coach Brian Daboll | Giants.com

Daboll on the Giants’ pass rush: “We have quite a bit more sacks at this time of the year than we did last year, but there’s still a lot of room for improvement. Those four guys are starting to gel in terms of pass rush games and communication, and that’s a work in progress. There’s been some good and there’s been some, obviously, things we can keep on working.”

New York Giants Quarter Pole Grades for the Defense | SI.com

While the coaches might want us to believe that it’s the little things a guy does that don’t show up on the stat sheet that matters most–and in the case of Burns and Thibodeaux, they do a lot of little things well–when a team has as much invested in a duo as the Giants have invested in Burns (financial capital) and Thibodeaux (draft capital), they need a lot more out of their starting outside linebackers than what they’ve gotten so far.

Shuffling at the bottom end of the roster

What we’ve learned about the Giants after 4 games: Is Malik Nabers being overused? | The Athletic

Rookie Theo Johnson is playing 79 percent of the snaps, which seems like too heavy of a workload for the fourth-round pick. Johnson has’t been a factor in the passing game (three catches for 37 yards), has been inconsistent as a blocker, and mental errors have been an issue. Johnson looks the part and could develop into a quality player, but the Giants need to take a bit off his plate because things look like they’re moving too fast right now.

Daniel Bellinger has been buried, playing just 22 percent of the snaps. The Giants clearly don’t view the 2022 fourth-round pick as a building block, but he’s a better all-around tight end than Johnson right now and should see his playing time increase.

Ex-Giant Justin Pugh Believes Evan Neal Could Help on Offense at Some Point | SI.com

Pugh praised Evan Neal’s run-blocking abilities as a strength, adding that the third-year offensive tackle just needs to restore his confidence in his pass blocking skills.

“I can say this: Evan Neal is the best run blocker on the Giants team right now–no one can run block better than Evan Neal,” said Pugh.

Green Bay, Buffalo voted worst NFL road trips; Los Angeles is best, player poll says | The Athletic

New York’s surprising third-place ranking for worst road trip mostly had to do with the fact that the Jets and Giants play in East Rutherford, N.J., and teams have to stay too far away from New York City to enjoy the Big Apple. Players mentioned MetLife Stadium’s playing surface as another negative.

How many more losses until Giants put Daniel Jones in bubble wrap? | NJ.com

The Giants’ season is spiraling again, after a brief reprieve with that sloppy win in Cleveland. They’re 1-3, with four tough games ahead — Sunday’s trip to Seattle, followed by home games against the Bengals and Eagles, then a Monday night visit to Pittsburgh. Will the Giants be 1-7 — and perhaps with an interim head coach — at the end of October?

2025 NFL Mock Draft: Jaguars take WR/CB Hunter at No. 1 overall, QB Sanders lands with the Raiders | PFF

10. New York Giants: QB Cam Ward, Miami. The end could be near for many current Giants players and decision-makers. One major change I expect is at quarterback. Cam Ward is having a Heisman-like season, putting up an impressive 8.7% big-time throw percentage and a 91.2 passing grade through five weeks.

5 NFL Head Coaches On The Hot Seat At 2024 Season’s Quarter Mark | The 33rd Team

4. Brian Daboll, New York Giants. Worst of all, the team is 30th in scoring (15 points per game) and has scored no touchdowns in its last four home games. If this lack of production on offense and by his quarterback continues, it will likely cost Daboll his job — most likely after the season — if the Giants remain at the bottom of the NFC East. The next five weeks are challenging. They play at Seattle, vs. Cincinnati and Philadelphia at home, at Pittsburgh, and at home against Washington.

11. Geno Smith Seattle Seahawks. His Seahawks got their first loss in prime time on Monday, but it wasn’t for his lack of zealous gunslinging. Smith routinely makes Seattle watchable due to his explosive sideline darts.

Seahawks Next Gen Stat Of The Week: Kenneth Walker III Turns On The Jets | Seahawks.com

Walker’s speed was evident on several plays, including two long runs on which he exceeded 20 miles per hour. Walker hit 20.86 MPH on a 28-yard run, according to NFL Next Gen Stats, making him the sixth-fastest ballcarrier in Week 4, and he also hit 20.33 MPH on his 21-yard touchdown run.

With those two runs, Walker was one of only two players league wide to exceed 20 miles per hour on a pair of runs along with Jacksonville running back Tank Bigsby.

NFL analyst Mark Schlereth ‘really impressed’ with Seahawks despite loss to Lions | Field Gulls

NFL on FOX analyst Mark Schlereth was among those who came away with a more positive outlook on the Seahawks.

“They’re better than I thought they were,” Schlereth said to Seattle Sports 710. “You hang 29 points up on Detroit and you dominate some of the offensive statistics and you do what you did against them, that’s a heck of a game. That’s offensive output on the road, dealing with crowd noise. And look at Detroit right now. I think they’ve got star players at all three levels of their defense. And to put up the kind of offensive numbers you put up, … I was really impressed.”
