Nick Chubb was limited in his return to practice from his major knee injury

When the Cleveland Browns and Washington Commanders square off in Week 5 of the NFL season, the two teams are sporting records that most would have assumed the other would have. The 3-1 Commanders are playing well with rookie QB Jayden Daniels looking really good, but not a one-man show, while the Browns have struggled pretty much all over the roster throughout the first quarter of the season.

Injuries continue to be a big story for Cleveland with Washington also having a large list to start the week. Early we learned that at least six players would not be practicing in Berea, Ohio but even more sat out.

In the first injury report of the week, the Week 5 matchup had 14 combined DNPs:

Browns Injury Report

  • RB Nick Chubb – Knee – Limited
  • OL Jack Conklin – Hamstring – DNP
  • OL Michael Dunn – Illness – Limited
  • CB Martin Emerson – Gameday concussion protocol evaluation – Full
  • DE Myles Garrett – Achilles – DNP
  • LB Jordan Hicks – Ribs, Elbow, Triceps – DNP
  • RB Nyheim Hines – Knee – Limited
  • OL James Hudson – Shoulder – Limited
  • OL Dawand Jones – Knee – Limited
  • WR Jerry Jeudy – Knee – Full
  • CB Greg Newsome II – Non-injury related – DNP
  • TE David Njoku – Ankle – Limited
  • DE Ogbo Okoronkwo – Illness – DNP
  • Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah – Hand – Full
  • OL Ethan Pocic – Ankle – DNP
  • RB Pierre Strong – Hamstring – Limited
  • OL Jedrick Wills – Knee – DNP
  • DE Alex Wright – Triceps – DNP

So much to unpack for Cleveland including Chubb, Hines and Dunn returning to practice on Wednesday after being designated to return from their respective lists. None of them currently count toward the Browns 53-man roster. Njoku practicing and Strong returning to practice is a good sign for the offense overall.

Commanders Injury Report

  • OL Nick Allegretti – Ankle – DNP
  • WR Noah Brown – Groin – Limited
  • S Percy Butler – Groin – Limited
  • RB Austin Ekeler – Concussion – Limited
  • TE Zach Ertz – Non-injury related – Rest – DNP
  • DE Clelin Ferrell – Knee – DNP
  • CB Emmanuel Forbes Jr. – Thumb – Full
  • LB Dominique Hampton – Illness – DNP
  • LB Jordan Magee – Knee – Full (Designated to return from IR)
  • QB Marcus Mariota – Pectoral – Full (Designated to return from IR)
  • S Quan Martin – Shoulder – Full
  • DT Jer’Zhan (Johnny) Newton – Foot – Limited
  • DE Efe Obada – Tibia/Fibula – Full (Designated to return from PUP)
  • S Tyler Owens – Shin – DNP
  • RB Brian Robinson – Knee – DNP

Washington has some similar things going on as Cleveland with players designated to return from lists that don’t count against their current roster, some interesting DNPs and even a matching DNP for illness.

We will continue to monitor the injury lists each day as we prepare for a crucial Week 5 matchup for the Browns
