It’s looking like it’ll be a matchup of two young dynamic dual-threat starting quarterbacks on Sunday.
While he won’t officially name him ‘QB1’ yet, longtime Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin indicated that Justin Fields will continue to start during Week 3 against the Indianapolis Colts:
“As we walk in the building tomorrow, I want Justin singularly focused on starting for us and doing what’s required to be ready to do that,” Tomlin said via ESPN’s Brooke Pryor.
“ . . . We’ll see where the week leads us. If [Russell Wilson’s] availability or the quality of his practice participation picks up, maybe we’ll consider that later in the week. If it doesn’t, then it won’t be a consideration, and we’ll just continue with where we are right now.”
The former 2021 11th overall pick of the Chicago Bears was cast off this offseason, as his former team elected to draft USC’s Caleb Williams with the #1 overall pick as its new franchise quarterback hopeful, effectively ending Fields’ prior up-and-down tenure.
The dynamic dual-threat quarterback has gotten off a fast start with his new team though, completing 55 of 75 pass attempts (73.3%) for 518 passing yards, 2 passing touchdowns, and an interception, as well as rushing for a rushing touchdown during 3 starts in 2024.
The Steelers have gone 3-0 during Fields’ initial debut, in relief of veteran Russell Wilson, who was initially named the starter, but was later injured. It doesn’t make much sense as to why Tomlin would make a move right now with Fields—and the team, playing very well.
Steelers running back Najee Harris, who injured his arm this past Sunday, is reportedly “likely to be ready for the Colts game on Sunday.” The former 2021 first round pick of the Steelers has 209 rushing yards on 55 carries (3.8 ypc. avg.) during 3 starts so far in 2024.
Meanwhile, Steelers linebacker Alex Highsmith is reportedly expected “to miss multiple weeks” ahead of their matchup with the Colts. He has 6 tackles and a sack on the year.
