The Giants do the roster shuffle two-step
The New York Giants have waived fullback Jakob Johnson.
Again.
The Giants originally signed Johnson back on Aug. 16, and he was with the team through the remainder of training camp and the pre-season. The Giants ultimately waived Johnson during final cutdowns. He was promptly signed to their practice squad and elevated to the active roster, released, signed to the practice squad, and bounced between the roster and practice squad multiple times.
For Giants fans who go back a few years will recognize this as the “Rhett Bomar Treatment”.
We don’t have a corresponding roster move as of this writing, but we should expect Johnson to clear waivers and be signed to the practice squad. He could be back on the practice squad and elevated to the active roster for Thursday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys.
Right now it seems likely that the Giants need the roster spot to sign linebacker Ty Summers to the active roster. Summers has proven to be a core special teams player for the Giants and has been on the field for 75 percent of their special teams snaps. Summers, a practice squad player, is out of game day elevations.
