It will happen in Week 5
Jared Allen may not have gotten his call to Canton yet, but he’s going to be receiving a unique honor when the Minnesota Vikings travel across the pond in Week 5.
The National Football League has announced that Allen will be one of the two initial inductees into the International Ring of Honor, with the ceremony taking place when the Vikings “host” the New York Jets at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on 6 October.
Allen will be joined by former New York Giants’ defensive lineman Osi Umenyiora, who was born in London and went on to win a pair of Super Bowls with New York.
The International Ring of Honor is being put together in order to “recognize those who have contributed to the growth and development of football in the U.K. and Ireland — both on- and off-the-field.” The ceremony will take place at halftime of the Week 5 contest, during which both Allen and Umenyiora will make remarks and have banners honoring their accomplishment unveiled. Those banners will remain up during all of the 2024 London Games and will continue to be displayed in future years.
Allen is, obviously, thrilled about this honor.
“London is very close to my heart, with a loyal Vikings fanbase and a place I will always remember playing,” said Allen. “Being recognized in the first-ever International Ring of Honour ceremony is an exciting moment, and I’m looking forward to being back in the U.K. at the first of three 2024 NFL London Games this season — the energy will be incredible.”
There hasn’t been any indication given as to whether or not any of the halftime ceremony will be aired during the broadcast of the Jets/Vikings game, but it would be kind of nice to see it. Even if it isn’t part of the broadcast, the Vikings will likely have footage of it available for our viewing pleasure after it’s completed.
Congratulations to Jared Allen on being one of the first two inductees into the NFL’s International Ring of Honor!
