The Linc – Bryce Huff’s effort is being criticized

Philadelphia Eagles news and links for 9/18/24.

Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links …

Film review: Eagles EDGE Bryce Huff is unplayable – PhillyVoice
0:12: Run play. Lol, what is this? Kyle Pitts washes him down the line of scrimmage with very little effort. This is atrocious. […] • 1:19: Screen to the opposite side of the field. This effort sucks. He’s jogging to the action, and is so non-threatening that 65 doesn’t even notice him. Content to let his teammates get the ball carrier to the ground. […] Haason Reddick was a closer for the Eagles in his two years in Philly. He made a lot of big plays, many of which sealed games. The Eagles could’ve used him on Monday night. Huff gave the Eagles absolutely nothing as a pass rusher or run defender, and when he had opportunities to make hustle plays he didn’t. If this is what Huff is going to be as a player all season, he’s going to be making $17 million/year to ride the bench, because he will simply be unplayable.

Eagles-Falcons snap counts: Bryce Huff played more … and somehow did even less – BGN
Bryce Huff played just 45% of the Eagles’ defensive snaps in Week 1. He ranked fourth among Eagles edge rushers in playing time. Huff moved up to 52% this week, putting him second among Eagles edge rushers in playing time. Despite this increase, he failed to log a single stat to even show up in the box score. Huff has one assisted tackle and zero other stats through two games this season. That’s pretty troubling!

In Roob’s Eagles stats: Historically bad run defense – NBCSP
1. The Eagles have allowed 6.4 yards per rushing attempt through two games, the worst in franchise history (and 14th-worst in NFL history). And if not for two Kirk Cousins kneel downs at the end of that game Monday night, which officially count as rushing attempts, that number would be 6.7, which would be 9th-worst all-time. They’ve allowed 315 rushing yards against the Packers and Falcons, the most through two games since the 1986 team allowed 403. They’ve already allowed 11 runs of at least 10 yards. They had allowed one at this point last year. And their next opponent, the Saints, are averaging 185 rushing yards per game so far.

RB Index, Week 3: Biggest offseason running back addition? Plus, a new No. 1 in the position rankings – NFL.com
2) Saquon Barkley. Everyone is talking about Barkley’s missed catch that would’ve secured the win over Atlanta, to which he said, “I dropped the ball, let my team down today. Shouldn’t have put the defense in that position. Make that catch and the game’s over.” He’s right, but the Eagles likely wouldn’t have been in a winning situation late without him. Barkley consistently helped extend drives Monday night, thanks to his tackle-breaking ability; his nine missed tackles forced were the most by a ball-carrier in Week 2, per Next Gen Stats. Barkley had over 100 scrimmage yards for the second straight week. He continues to do that, and the Eagles should be just fine in the long run.

The Best NFL Bets for Week 3 – The Ringer
There are also concerns with the Eagles defense. Atlanta scored on five of its final six full offensive possessions, and the Eagles’ defensive line struggled to stop the run or generate a pass rush. The Vic Fangio scheme won’t be effective if the defensive line can’t disrupt opposing offenses. Philadelphia ranks 30th in EPA per drive allowed through two weeks, and the market has lost confidence in the Eagles. The Eagles were initially favored by 2.5 points on the road, but that has shifted, and New Orleans is now nearly a field goal favorite. The time to bet on New Orleans for Week 3 has likely passed. Verdict: Pass.

A look back at the history between the Saints and Eagles – Canal Street Chronicles
This will be the 35th time that these two franchises will face one another with 5 of those matchups taking place in the post season. The Saints currently have a 16-19 record against the Eagles, with New Orleans winning 6 of their last 10 games, 2 of which were playoff wins in 2014 and 2019. One of their most memorable matchups came in the Superdome on January 13, 2007, during the NFC Divisional Playoffs where the Saints defeated the Eagles 27-24, leading them to their first-ever NFC Championship Game.

Before Super Bowl XXXIX, Bill Belichick had incorrect inside information about Terrell Owens – PFT
It’s a funny story, to be sure. But it includes a fascinating nugget. How did New England’s team doctor get access to material, non-public information about Terrell Owens’s health? Although Belichick’s comment was muddled (“saw the X-rays, saw his doctor, whatever”) there’s enough there to raise eyebrows regarding whether someone said something that shouldn’t have been said — and whether Belichick specifically asked his team doctor to try to finagle information not publicly available.

5 points: Observations from the Cowboys loss in Week 2 – Blogging The Boys
Fifth Point: Hopefully, the finger-pointing doesn’t start. Luckily for the Cowboys, McCarthy has shown the ability to bounce back from a loss like this during his time in Dallas. After his team lets up 40 or more points (five times), McCarthy’s record the following week is 3-1. If the team can find a way to beat the Ravens and go to 2-1 before a short week against the New York Giants, that would be perfect.

New York Giants claim linebacker off waivers from Philadelphia Eagles – Big Blue View
The New York Giants finally have a full 53-man roster. Earlier on Tuesday we learned that the Giants had signed veteran placekicker Greg Joseph off the Detroit Lions practice squad to replace the injured Graham Gano. The Giants announced Tuesday afternoon that Gano has been placed on IR. The Giants also announced Tuesday afternoon that they have claimed linebacker Patrick Johnson off waivers from the Philadelphia Eagles. The 26-year-old Johnson was a seventh-round pick by the Eagles in 2021. He has played in 49 regular season games with two starts for the Eagles.

Vote for Jayden Daniels as NFL Rookie of the Week for his performance vs the Giants – Hogs Haven
The Commanders finished with 425 yards of total offense, with no turnovers. By the end of the weekend, Washington was in first place in the NFC East, with a 1-1 overall record and the only team with a division win. Through 2 weeks, Daniels ranks 6th among quarterbacks in the NFL in EPA per play (+.22), the only rookie quarterback to rank higher than 29th. He’s been nominated for Rookie of the Week — again — after winning the honor for his game against the Buccaneers in Week 1.

Patriots release veteran wide receiver Jalen Reagor from practice squad – Pats Pulpit
A vested veteran has departed from the practice squad in Foxborough. The New England Patriots announced the release of wide receiver Jalen Reagor on Tuesday, opening an additional spot. Reagor, 25, had outlasted the NFL’s 53-man roster deadline in August before being released to make room for waiver claims. He returned as a member of the scout team soon after and remained in that capacity through the 1-1 start to the campaign. The No. 21 overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft initially arrived at Gillette Stadium as the practice squad formed in 2023. He did so after appearing in 45 games, including 24 starts, between stops with the Philadelphia Eagles and Minnesota Vikings.

Panthers’ Bryce Young trade is already one of the worst in history, and it’s not finished – SB Nation
All the Houston Texans had to do was lose in the final game of the NFL season to earn the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Houston was just 2-13-1 on the year as it entered its season finale vs. a hapless Indianapolis Colts team whose 4-11-1 record somehow looked impressive by comparison. With such a valuable draft pick on the line, the Texans were widely expected to tank the game and head into the offseason with the ultimate bargaining chip. Head coach Lovie Smith had other plans. Knowing his fate with the organization was all but sealed, Smith pushed his team hard to win the game, and against all odds they delivered. With under a minute left in regulation, Texans QB Davis Mills delivered a strike to tight end Jordan Akins for the go-ahead touchdown. Somehow, Houston had won its third game of the season, in the process falling to the No. 2 pick in the draft. Smith was fired hours after the game.
