5. CB Andru Phillips, PFF Grade: 77.5. Phillips impressed for the second straight week, this time as a starter. Through two weeks, he has earned an 80.0 coverage grade, and while he has given up seven receptions so far this season, they have totaled just 14 yards.
9. WR Malik Nabers, PFF Grade: 73.9. If the first two weeks of the season have taught us anything, it’s that the New York Giants will have to feed their new No. 1 receiver plenty of targets each week. His 24 targets over the first two weeks of the season are tied for second in the NFL, and he has averaged 2.51 yards per route run so far.

Malik Nabers again nominated for Rookie of the Week | Giants.com
Nabers has gotten his NFL career off to a strong start. He heads into this weekend’s matchup against the Cleveland Browns ranking fourth in the league in receiving yards (193) and tied for second in receptions (15) and targets (25). Nabers also leads the NFL with five catches of 20+ yards.

Rookie nickel cornerback Dru Phillips played 66 of 72 snaps, and he was forced to miss three snaps due to a concussion test that he cleared. He played six other snaps on special teams. Phillips finished with 12 tackles, including seven solos with a sack. He was also called for a phantom defensive holding penalty that wiped away a Brian Burns sack on third down early in the fourth quarter.

Because of his play, Phillips has caught the eye of a former Giants defensive back Ryan Clark who tweeted out “Dru Phillips is going to be an absolutely stud at the nickel position in this league.”

And after his viewings of the Giants’ 21-18 loss to the Washington Commanders on Sunday, Kurt Warner praised New York QB Daniel Jones.

It’s not surprising that there are growing pains as players adjust to Bowen’s system, which is far different from predecessor Wink Martindale. But it’s hard to see the run defense making dramatic strides based on the personnel in the middle of the defense.
Veteran run stoppers Leonard Williams and A’Shawn Robinson have been replaced by young Day 3 draft picks and undrafted rookie Elijah Chatman. Those young players don’t appear ready to fill the big shoes left by the departed veterans.

There is a danger here. What is felt on the outside cannot infiltrate inside to the locker room. What is coursing through the veins of paying customers cannot flow into the bloodstream of the players and coaches.
Quality teams glance ahead at the schedule to hunt victories. So too do teams like the Giants, in reverse. The inclination is to go week-to-week and try to figure out when the next win is available for consumption. Browns this week, on the road? Cowboys coming off a short week on Thursday Night Football? At Seattle? When it is a team that finds ways to lose, finding pathways to victory is not as simple as turning on the navigation device and following directions.

It sounds like Garrett may be on the injury report this week, but should still be expected to play. In two games, Garrett has 2.0 sacks, two tackles for loss, and two forced fumbles.

Cleveland ran 16 plays with six or more offensive linemen, which accounted for 24.6% of its plays in Week 2, according to ESPN Research. The Browns, who scored on each of their three first-half drives before stumbling in the second half, averaged 4.25 yards per play with the personnel grouping. In Week 1, Cleveland ran only two plays in the jumbo package for a total of 1 yard.
