ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky suggests Rams should trade for Bryce Young
As Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford continues to get older, how the team addresses the issue of a successor will be discussed. That will especially be the case as the Rams continue to struggle.
That was the case on Tuesday when ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky went on the Pat McAfee show. Discussing Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young, Orlovsky suggested that the Panthers should trade the former number one pick and the Rams should make a call. Said Orlovsky,
“I think Bryce is done in Carolina and I would encourage them just to trade him. You’re not making this move unless you have already decided as an organization ‘hey, we’re moving on’ or you’re going to lose your locker room if you keep playing him. I think he’s done in Carolina. If I were the Los Angeles Rams, I would probably make a call. This might be a situation now where Matthew is older, their team has been absolutely destroyed by injuries and their perspective on their season is very different right now. We’ve seen Baker (Mayfield), we’ve seen Geno (Smith), we’ve seen Sam Darnold now a little bit. Those guys have remade their careers, but they’re all at different places.”

If the Rams were going to sign or trade for a young quarterback, this would have been the offseason to do it. Justin Fields and Zach Wilson were both available. Those player at least provide some athletic upside. On the other hand, Young is an average athlete with an average arm and a small frame. His ceiling if he does turn it around is potentially Tua Tagovailoa. That’s not a quarterback that is going to elevate the players around him.
As it stands, ending up with a top-10 pick is certainly within the realm of possibilities. In the case that does happen, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Rams take a quarterback such as Quinn Ewers. However, it’s hard to see them giving up assets to trade for what is damaged goods at this point. Young isn’t anywhere near the player that he was at Alabama. Even then, there were serious questions about what he was as a prospect.
What the Rams do at quarterback when it comes to a succession plan for Matthew Stafford will certainly be discussed this season. With that said, a trade for Bryce Young doesn’t seem likely.
