Your Monday Night Football open thread

It’s a battle of the birds as the Atlanta Falcons will travel to take on the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football to cap Week 2 of the 2024 season.

It’s early, but this is a game which could already have playoff ramifications, at least for the Falcons. Atlanta was pretty widely expected to win the NFC South, however they’re suddenly looking like they might finish third as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers look stout behind Baker Mayfield, and the New Orleans Saints have eclipsed the 40-point barrier in consecutive weeks (they’re currently outscoring opponents 91-29). That puts a lot of pressure on the 0-1 Falcons to show some life with free agent addition Kirk Cousins.

The Eagles, meanwhile, are expected to be the class of the NFC, though their Week 1 win over the Packers was anything but pretty. Former New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley had himself a game in week 1, but the rest of the team isn’t quite living up to their potential. Complicating matters is an injury to star receiver A.J. Brown, who had 119 yards and a touchdown, but will be out with a hamstring injury.

The Eagles are 5.5-point favorites (-225 on the money line) per FanDuel Sportsbook.

Chris’ Pick: I whiffed badly a week ago by picking the Jets over the 49ers with Christian McCaffrey out. This week I’m playing the odds and say that while the Eagles will miss Brown, Barkley, DeVonta Smith, and their defense will carry the day. I do expect to see improvement from the Falcons and I think they can pull off the upset, but I wouldn’t bet on it.
