Austin Seibert kicks seven field goals as Washington wins

The New York Giants (0-2) fell to the Washington Commanders 21-18 on Sunday in Landover, Maryland, losing a game they badly needed to win after a disastrous performance Week 1 against the Minnesota Vikings.

Washington’s Austin Seibert kicked a game-winning 30-yard field goal, his seventh of the game as time expired.

Washington scored on every possession, excluding getting the ball with :08 left in the first half.

Kicking was the story of the game.

A hamstring injury suffered by placekicker Graham Gano on the first play of the game was costly for the Giants. New York scored three touchdowns, but punter Jamie Gillan missed an extra point and the Giants failed on two two-point conversions. Gillan also committed a landing zone infraction on a fourth-quarter kickoff with the Giants leading, 18-15. It put the ball at the 40-yard line.

Firsts

  • The Giants’ opening drive touchdown, a seven-play, 53-yard drive that took 4:18 and ended on a nice 7-yard run by Devin Singletary, was their first opening drive touchdown in 27 games.
  • Malik Nabers’ first career touchdown catch came on a 4-yard pass from Daniel Jones with :08 left in the first half. It gave the Giants a 12-9 lead.

Stats

  • Daniel Jones went 16 of 28 for 178 yards, 2 touchdowns and a 100.0 passer rating.
  • Malik Nabers had 10 catches for 128 yards and a touchdown, but had a crucial fourth-down drop with 2:09 left and the score tied 18-18 that set up Washington’s game-winning points.

Injury news

  • Placekicker Graham Gano, who was on Saturday’s injury report with a groin injury, left the game after trying to chase down Washington’s Austin Ekeler on the opening kickoff.
  • Wide receiver Malik Nabers was checked for a concussion after a 28-yard first-quarter catch. He returned on the next series.
  • Cornerback Dru Phillips was evaluated for a concussion in the fourth quarter. Phillips was cleared.

What’s next?

The Giants will play a second straight road game when they travel to Ohio to face the Cleveland Browns. The Sunday, Sept. 22 kickoff will be at 1 p.m. ET.
