Well, this isn’t good news.
The Philadelphia Eagles officially downgraded A.J. Brown from questionable to OUT for Monday night’s game against the Atlanta Falcons.
Brown suffered a hamstring injury during Friday’s practice and was unable to practice on Saturday. The Eagles further gauged Brown’s status during Sunday’s walkthrough and ultimately determined he couldn’t play. Annoying development.
The Eagles did not downgrade Johnny Wilson from questionable to out, so, perhaps the rookie will be able to play?
If not, the Eagles will be down to just three healthy receivers on the 53-man roster: DeVonta Smith, Jahan Dotson, and Britain Covey. They’re expected to bump up Parris Campbell from the practice squad as well.
Brown’s absence is obviously a big loss since he’s an elite player who Jalen Hurts loves throwing to. It’s just the second game the Eagles will play without Brown since they traded for him during the 2022 offseason. The other one was Philly’s 32 to 9 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the playoffs earlier this year.
The Eagles should still have enough talent to be able to come out on top against a Falcons offense that appears to be hampered by Kirk Cousins’ limitations. Smith is obviously a really good player who previously shined in the game that Brown missed. Dallas Goedert and Saquon Barkley need to step up and help carry the offensive load.
Elsewhere at receiver, Dotson has talent but it’s unclear how much Hurts trusts him; he only saw one target last week. Covey is more of a possession receiver. Campbell is probably best suited to play in the slot, which means Smith could see less snaps there.
The Eagles will hope that Brown will be able to return in time for their Week 3 game against the New Orleans Saints. Sitting him in this spot could be smart if it ultimately helps the hammy from being a nagging issue.
