Wrapping up Week 1 with a potential Super Bowl preview
Week 1 of the 2024 NFL season wraps up with a potential Super Bowl preview as the New York Jets take on the San Francisco 49ers.
Aaron Rodgers’ debut with the Jets last season only lasted a handful of plays, but he’s back in the fold this year which makes the team a contender given how stout New York’s defense is. However, Brock Purdy and the 49ers await and are looking to defend their title as NFC Champions this season.

Holder’s Picks: NYJ +4.5, Under 43.5, SF ML
I’m going with a bit of a hedge with my picks tonight, taking the Jets with the points but the 49ers to win outright. I think this will be a close game that comes down to a field goal, especially since San Francisco spent all of training camp without two key offensive players; wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and offensive tackle Trent Williams. However, the 49ers do have more talent and better coaching to at least get the job done. As for the total, these are two pretty good defenses, and Rodgers—a Northern California native—typically struggles when playing in San Francisco.
For the injury report, the 49ers have ruled out defensive end Yetur Gross-Matos (knee) and, surprisingly, Christian McCaffery (calf, Achilles). Also, linebacker Dee Winters (ankle) and safety Talanoa Hufanga (knee) are doubtful while guard Aaron Banks (finger) is questionable. The Jets will be without guard Wes Schweitzer (hand) and linebacker Zaire Barners (ankle) while edge rusher Haason Reddick continues to hold out for a new contract.
