Jevon Holland keeps Dolphins in game against Jacksonville Jaguars with stunning forced fumble.
The National Football League is back! The Miami Dolphins are back! So, your weekly MVP (Most Valuable ‘Phin) article is back as well!
Each week, win or lose, I will highlight a player whose heroic efforts in the game deserve a spotlight being placed on them. It could be for overall game performance. It could be for a timely, game-saving play. This week’s recipient deserves recognition for just that — a play that changed the outlook of the contest and allowed the Miami Dolphins to stay in contention for an opening week victory.
Miami Dolphins Week One MVP – Jevon Holland
The Dolphins came out of the gate sluggish on both offense and defense on Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars. As a result, the team found themselves down 10 points late in the third quarter, with Trevor Lawrence and the Jaguars offense driving the length of the field, poised to add points to their total and put a Dolphins win just out of reach.
That was, until safety Jevon Holland saved the day for Miami.
With just over two minutes left in the third quarter, Jaguars running back Travis Etienne Jr. took a handoff from Lawrence at the Dolphins 13 yard line. He found daylight, and after 10 yards, was ready to dance into the endzone, giving the Jaguars a 17 point lead with roughly one quarter left play.
It was then that Holland, in a dazzling display of situational awareness, intentionally punched the football from the hands of Etienne Jr., allowing fellow defensive back Kader Kohou to pounce on the pigskin nine yards deep in the endzone for a touchback — giving the Dolphins offense an opportunity to strike for an 80-yard touchdown on the very next play.
It was a 14 point swing, and instead of being down 17 points, Miami would pull to within three points, eventually tying the game, before ultimately winning the contest on a Jason Sanders field goal as time expired.
Without that forced fumble from Holland, we’re all feeling a bit more down in the dumps this week due to a likely Dolphins defeat.
