The Bengals season got off to a rough start
For the third year in a row, the Cincinnati Bengals failed to score a touchdown in the first half of week 1. In the Burrow era, this team has struggled in its opener, and that has not changed in 2024 against the New England Patriots.
The Ja’Marr Chase contract saga has definitely changed the focus on the game, especially with Chase making some key plays.
The team did start a comeback against the Patriots in the second half, but it ended with disappointment. The Bengals punted on 4th down and were unable to get the stop they needed.
So how did Bengals Twitter react? Let’s take a look:
A very Bengals-esque Week 1 thus far.

The Bengals made a controversial call not to go for it on fourth down after the failed touchdown drive, and Twitter was not happy.
Sloppy, unprepared, uncreative
— Blake Jewell (@BlakeJewellNFL) September 8, 2024
And the drive is an epic fail.
Pressure for an incompletion, dropped pass by Zack Moss and checkdown for nothing. Then, to top it all off, after a nice punt by Ryan Rehkow, Ja’Marr Chase takes time walking off the field and Bengals get hit for illegal substitution.

Another 3rd down throw well short of the sticks
Pathetic drive

This isn’t right move Charles Davis.
Your defense is going up over 5 yards per carry.
— Andrew Russell (@Andrew_Russell7) September 8, 2024
Terrible decision to punt that ball. You trust your defense for 3 plays vs Burrow to convert 1???
— Taylor (@_TaylorCornell) September 8, 2024
The Bengals had a chance after the punt to get a stop, but they gave up the first down after failing to wrap up Rhamondre Stevenson.
Logan Wilson and Dax Hill get juked behind the line and the Pats get the first down.
Bengals holding on by a pinky finger now.

Dax Hill blows his run fit
— Let Joe Cook (@burrow_time) September 8, 2024
After the Bengals run defense failed to stop Stevenson, and he got another first down, that was the game, and the Patriots were able to knee the ball to take the win.
Ball game.
Really pathetic home opener on all fronts.
Have to put all efforts to getting a W in KC next week.
Week 1 always open to surprises across the League.

Bengals vibes are horrific. Game over. https://t.co/MMeBXgrhHf
— Hayden Winks (@HaydenWinks) September 8, 2024
Humbling. How are you this sloppy and unprepared?
— Chris Roling (@Chris_Roling) September 8, 2024
Couldn’t stop the run, couldn’t hold onto the football.
This sucks.

If you are disappointed by your team’s week 1 performance… Just remember… You could be the Bengals.
— Marcus Whitman (@TFG_Football) September 8, 2024
The Bengals have now started the season 0-1 five out of six times since 2019
— Kelsey Conway (@KelseyLConway) September 8, 2024
Zac Taylor and the Bengals remain the worst Week 1 team in the NFL.
— Marcus Mosher (@Marcus_Mosher) September 8, 2024
The Bengals play a much better team in KC in Week 2 and will get smoked if they do not clean up the messy play. It is up to them to pick up the pieces and try to put them back together again, especially on offense.
Zac Taylor: Lose turnover battle by 3, two fumbles one on offense. Missed a lot of tackles today.
“Not a recipe.”
— Paul Dehner Jr. (@pauldehnerjr) September 8, 2024
Zac: Disappointing start, obviously. Didn’t start fast enough offensively. Lost turnover battle. Lot of missed tackles.
— Jay Morrison (@ByJayMorrison) September 8, 2024
The Bengals looked like a team that had one star receiver skip training camp, another star receiver on the sideline with a hamstring injury, a new-look defense that lost its best run stopper and no plan to showcase Burrow’s biggest strengths. https://t.co/xx0WWZAepA
— Charlie Goldsmith (@CharlieG__) September 8, 2024
Taylor: “Most frustrating thing is we didn’t play well. Looking at the turnover battle and looking at the missed tackles.”
